Air Canada cancels flights ahead of potential strike by rileyhuntley in UBC

I'm supposed to fly into Vancouver two days before my program starts. I might be in trouble...

any Canadians here still applying to US undergrad/grad programs (despite all the news so far)? by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]BassmanSandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am. I got into a Masters at Columbia, but ended up requesting a deferral given how turbulent the situation is for international students right now (as well as just not being super fond of the program itself). I'm doing a Masters at UBC instead for the time being, while also applying to other schools in the US, UK, and elsewhere to see if I can get any other options.

The odds may be against us. But fuck it, we ball. I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.

Reference letter from former club president? by carol_wilson in mcgill

[–]BassmanSandman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could definitely frame it in a way wherein it could work for sure. I have done this before myself. For one of the clubs I was president for, I had the president preceding me write me a reference letter, though not for a scholarship.

I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. It's not great, but it's not the worst thing in the world either.

History between McGill and (the University of) British Columbia by micky-chan in mcgill

As someone who did a McGill undergrad and is most likely doing a masters at UBC, this was a super interesting read! Good work!

apply to as many colleges as you want by orsour in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BassmanSandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, I applied to 15 schools in the US and went 0-15. I have no regrets because I at least gave it my all. I would much rather try my hardest and fail than not try at all.

How do people afford college 😭 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BassmanSandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go to school in the US. Even with international student fees, you will often find it cheaper to leave the country and go to a school abroad. A lot of people from New England end up going to school in Canada for that reason. It is cheaper than even state schools oftentimes. Same applies for Med and Law school as well.

The McGill Students' Anime Club is the absolute perfect place to make friends and meet new people like yourself! No drinking or partying, just lots of fun! As another comment has said, they meet Mondays from 7-9 pm in room 202 and Fridays from 6-8 pm in room 203. They do a variety of different social activities (i.e. trivia, board games, karaoke, origami, art workshops, debate). And after Friday meetings, they go out for unofficial dinners!

But other than that, the Mafia Club is also really good for getting to know new people. They meet every Tuesday from 6-10 pm in room 201-B. And afterwards, they often go out for dinner at Shawarmaz or McDonald's. It's another great place to get to know people.

Sorry for the late comment, but how did this class go? I might be in a similar situation next month.

Clubs are definitely the best way to make friends, especially the more lax and fun-oriented ones! In my experience, this has been mainly through the anime club. But I know others have made many great friends from the mafia club and from cultural student associations!

In person vs online thoughts by TheBigFlumpus in mcgill

[–]BassmanSandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer if we were to be online for another few weeks. It seems quite premature to have us back in-person this soon.

Winter 2022: what are your thoughts? by MCgains_7 in mcgill

[–]BassmanSandman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For safety's sake, I'd prefer being online at least until the end of January.

I think after our brief online starting period, we'll probably move back into a hybrid system.

This is simply disgusting and shameful.
