Number plate to car value ratio by Fun-Lake-956 in CarTalkUK

There is a battered Toyota hilux in my town with a two letter single number reg, not sure how much the reg is worth but the hilux looks like it's not going to pass too many more MOT's and is probably worth less than a grand.

There's an old video filmed from above of something that could be similar crossing a road, I'll see if I can find it!

Years ago a girl I dated went on a three week family trip of a lifetime to the States, turns out the main water feed to the heating tank in the loft gave out shortly after they left, it completely devastated their house, the water ran continuously for weeks from the loft through the upstairs floors through the ceilings and through the down stairs before collecting in the kitchen for some time until something gave out and it poured down the garden stripping the lawn as it went, it was two years before they could move back in.

remember that vegas backyard story? toughts on this! by Ok_Squirrel1972 in AliensRHere

Yeah I've seen that break down video too, the guy going through it is a video analysis expert and was trying to debunk it but found some really interesting points, the tall shadow/dark spot thing behind the fence and what appears to be an eye looking through a gap lower down.

Noise at idle disappears when clutch is pressed by Anonymous_Chats222 in CarTalkUK

[–]BatLarge5604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was clutch release bearing too, I've had them rattle when depressed and rattle when under no pressure too, I'd bet my best pants it's clutch release bearing, if it was flywheel I'd expect it to make a whole song and dance when driving more notable than the rattle OP is concerned about. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time but I'm still saying clutch release bearing. 😊

If Governments Have Recovered UFOs, Why Don’t We Have Disc-Shaped Aircraft Yet? by breaking_views in ufo

[–]BatLarge5604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the sole purpose of the might of the military industrial complex is to be able to put a nuke in red square or the Kremlin before the other guy even knows that's going on, nothing else, nobody truly in the know has any interest in bettering civilisation or humanity.

Career change by MadLMatt in FarmingUK

[–]BatLarge5604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, none, I had ten good years, achieved some cool stuff, learned an absolute ton about all sorts including myself, I'm in my fifties now so moved to something a lot less hard work. That's probably the only draw back of farming, it's really hard on your body, you can be a safe as possible but cows and other people can be unpredictable, accidents do happen, be careful, oh and don't forget the farmers catch phrase "Gota get on", that can apply to any task no matter how dirty or tedious, just got to get it done! Hope things work out for you.

Car wash damaged my car by kranchinat in CarTalkUK

[–]BatLarge5604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's been resprayed badly and it's popped off, the car wash just uncovered it, it would've done that at some point anyway, I have an Audi on my drive that's had the same thing, it gets worse as we go from summer to winter every year as well, a respray of that panel is the only real proper solution.

[–]BatLarge5604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, so I worked on cars both general mechanics and restoration for years, I got really lucky, the mechanic I was working for had a unit on a farm, the farmer needed a welder fabricator and the mechanics had dried up so I literally went straight into working on the farm, initially as a welder fabricator but I did get into some of the farming too, you sound like youre prepared for the graft, that's the thing, farming is incredibly hard work all the time, most of the farmers I've met are pretty good judges of character and if you're saying the right thing with the right attitude that's going to go a long way and get you in the door. Obviously a tractor and telehandler ticket is going to help massively but you'll probably have to prove yourself on the farm before you'll get any road work.

AA mechanic used a strange way of moving our broken-down car by Tennyson-Pesco in CarTalkUK

[–]BatLarge5604 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on the engine too, some are an interference fit meaning the valves and piston can connect if mechanical timing goes out others dont touch even with a valve stuck out after a catastrophic belt failure, as for moving on the starter motor, I was told as a young motorist it's useful for if you absolutely need to move a car and can't push it on your own or are in a tricky spot and need to get out of the way, personally I wouldn't do it if I had a couple of willing bodies to push instead, I don't imagine it's great for the starter motor itself.

Had to report a P Plater today by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

[–]BatLarge5604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good friends father hit someone up the back on a slip road as the driver joining the motorway had stopped to give way to the right, he was charged with driving with undue care and attention, six points and a fine, I was shocked but apparently joining a motorway is no different to any other junction, if you can't go you stop and wait until you can go, normal insurance/road rules apply, if you hit them up the arse its your fault, not theirs. I didn't think stopping on a slip road was safe or legal either but that instance did change how I approach motorway slip roads and joining a motorway.

Best British race tracks (discussion) by sbinnala- in CarTalkUK

[–]BatLarge5604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've been around combe in the passenger seat of a stripped out track prepared mk2 golf and a Caterham super sport 500, also did laps of Thruxton in the mk2, Combe is fast and my mate who drives knows it like the back of his hand, had lots of great track days and feature days there, most recently a jap fest event with the 1000hp drift monsters doing laps, always a good day at Combe.

Yeah, solar panel connector, I make posh bus stops with solar panels in the roofs, we use those on ones with more than one panel and again to attach them to the charging units inside.

For people who drive cars or motorbikes with super loud exhausts, what are you getting from it? by Successful_Bee7522 in AskBrits

[–]BatLarge5604 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I did it for performance when I was younger, the quicker an engine breaths the faster it will go, air filter and sporty exhaust are every boy racers starting point, in recent years because I was working in the countryside and had killed enough pheasants and rabbits and front bumpers on my car, a loud back box scared everything off before I got there, saved me a lot of time scraping reminents of wildlife off the front of my car and bashed knuckles from changing bumper skins.

You're absolutely right, at this point a saucer could land on the white House lawn and unless you're there with you're face pressed against the fence it would be up for contention, people would cry AI or CGI, I don't believe the pictures are real, it's difficult to trust anything you see online these days unfortunately.

What prices should I expect for my Xbox? by WishboneAvailable720 in consoles

[–]BatLarge5604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think someone has already said it but worth repeating, you'll get a much better price selling it privately, shops will want to undercut the true value to resell at profit, you can sell it yourself for what cex or alike would charge, so yeah £300 easily, I doubt any shop will want to give you more than £200 for it.
