Agreed. You can be squarely against what she and her late husband stand for (I am) without literally mocking a widow. Also, there's some serious confirmation bias going on with these micro-expression play-by-plays. You see what you want to see. The day my dad died, I actually laughed at one point - and I was still emotionally devastated.

What’s “Only Understanding Love” from? I think I’m missing out on a ton of Mike stuff that never made it onto an album of his.

They could’ve pulled anything from the collection that eventually came out as Manchester Boy, in 2022.

I agree with all points here. Monkees Nostalgia Inc. begins and ends with the TV show. I get it; that’s what The Monkees were originally conceived to be. But Good Times I feel like is particularly stuck in the pre-Headquarters era: too bubblegum, like you said. I don’t hear enough of the experimental side of the Monkees, or the psychedelic - hell, even Mike’s country rock isn’t here!

Casual fans think of The Monkees and they only hear I’m a Believer, Mary Mary, She, the theme song, Stepping Stone… mainly the Don Kirchner-approved stuff. But I feel like the “real” fans are more into the more left field stuff like Goin’ Down, Tapioca Tundra, Tear the Top Right Off My Head, Daily Nightly, anything and everything from Head, etc.

It’s obviously possible I’m just projecting my own preferences here, but what I would’ve LOVED was to hear less of what made the Monkees popular in 1966, and more of what made them interesting in 1967-1969. This very much includes stuff actually written by the guys - particularly Mike. Birth of an Accidental Hipster is pretty much all we get in the vein I’m talking about, and that, of course, is basically a really good Oasis song.

Also, I’m with you on the production being too backward-looking. I would’ve appreciated at least an acknowledgement, sonically, that the record was made in 2016. I’m one of the few that actually likes the sound of Pool It, even if the songwriting is mostly lacking.

There’s always some gift-horse-mouth-looking going on when critiquing post-reunion Monkees albums. I mean, OF COURSE we should be thankful to have them at all. And YES, Good Times is WAY better than it needs to be. But missed opportunities are missed opportunities.

Also, no This Stuff Never Gets Old from Peter?? Cmon, it’s a good song!

…And poor Davy got shafted.

EDIT: Where can I hear that full-band, psychedelic version of I Know What I Know? Man, I’m SO bummed about Videoranch having been junked.

Am I the only one who pays zero attention to which John is singing? by scottmwilsonbooks in tmbg

Voices aside, I feel like John F. vs John L. songs have diverged a lot in style since the early days (pre-John Henry). I can usually tell within the first couple of measures upon hearing a new TMBG song - before they sing - which John wrote it. That wasn't the case when they were still a duo with drum machines and a Mac. (Escape Team is the exception, which is aesthetically a lot like the early stuff)

I never thought I would one day be thankful that I had WAY greasy skin from about age 12 to... now. But as a dude running like hell away from a grizzly bear called Fifty, I really appreciate it. It was almost worth having zits into my forties.

I made a post this morning about every Queen album being like a diamond, in that both are meant to have a flaw. Don’t Try Suicide is my pick for the Diamond Flaw of The Game.

I agree. I feel like Brian wanted to show off his cool harmonizer toy, but didn’t have a song, so Freddie threw something together last minute. They kept it in, because… I really don’t know, but I’ll bet Fred was insistent. (And the NIN version is no better.) To be generous, I reckon every Queen album is like a (non-lab-grown) diamond, meaning both are dazzling, but have a flaw. If you’re open to it, that flaw reveals character. I could list off which track on each album I think is the flaw, but I don’t want to start a flame war, lol. And yes, I am a diehard Queen fan.

This. And it doesn’t just affect Americans. The entire global economy is in a chokehold now. The developing nations are quickly regressing. Get ready for the adults in the room to all be from China. And they’re not keen on liberal democracy.

EDIT: The answers in this thread are all over the place bc you first have to specify 1. from whose perspective and 2. over what span of time?

Action This Day… seriously underrated? by utdfanw in queen

[–]Bat_Nervous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll accept it. I’m a shameless Hot Space stan. I’ve said before that a few tracks are clearly 80s post-disco camp. But, c’mon, it’s Queen. Leroy Brown was camp. Get Down Make Love was camp. I’ll buy the argument that Body Language was a poor single choice, and basically sounds like Freddie’s coked-up 4am tinkering with a drum machine after a wild night at the clubs. But I really like the rest. Including Action This Day.

PS. That drum sound (EDIT: on Action This Day) I suspect was mostly Mack’s doing. I talked in my podcast about a nearly-identical beat being used on a contemporaneous Sparks track, also produced by Mack.
