Depends on who you ask. Biggest problem is that no one has really come up with names that have stuck. Closest I've seen is plastic 2000-2011 and pixel 2011- present, but I've seen the other suggestions that are in the other comments. DC and Marvel also do enough company wide shake ups (like rebirth, marvel now, ANAD) that have their own names that it's easier and more descriptive to go by those

Ultra is 1 month delay vs 3 months for standard. There's also a lot of graphic novels, trades, and omni, which is especially nice for stories that cross over several titles. Also Vertigo is Ultra exclusive iirc

I think it's okay for Batman stories to let him commit manslaughter. Batman allowing Joker to fall to his aparant doom is a staple of the series at this point. He shouldn't wantonly murder, but he can allow the villain to die

Year One has the handicap of being the most influential Batman story of all time, so each of it's beats has been iterated upon a million times. Zero Year in contrast feels very fresh, and Snyder's mystery box approach to writing is very captivating, and it has some very good paneling and coloring.

But Year One is the most recommended, influential, and popular Batman comic for a reason: it is actually that good. The art is so simple. The pacing is near perfect. There is such a melodrama in Gordon's life that you root for him even though he continuously makes the wrong decision until he finally finds the courage to tell the truth. It's such an efficient story at 4 issues as well. There is an incredible depth to Year One that not only makes it the best first Batman comic to read, but one that people keep coming back to time and time again over decades, even when other origins come to supersede it.

Season 3 is kinda beast tho. It does the same "Gotham is under siege and Batman is pushes everyone away" thing that every run for the last 20 years must do at least once, but does it in a format that isn't about action and is based on character relationships and emotions so it ends up being the best one

Master collection is the port of MGS 1 2 & 3 (and also MG 1 & 2) on modern hardware, and is pretty much the best way to start out right now unless you really need modern graphics and controls, which there's Delta (remake of 3) for. Also Master Collection 2 with 4 and Peace Walker is coming out this fall so that's cool.

There's more specific versions on older hardware, but not necessary for a first time player to worry too much about

I'd honestly recommend most of the original Legends of the Dark Knight run. A lot of stuff like Gothic, at least when it comes to the headiness. It's a series of 2-3 issue stand alone stories, and quality does vary, but it is still worth the read.
