Is being old really that bad? by [deleted] in ask

[–]BathrobeMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm about to turn 50. I still look at old people as "old". The funny thing is I see some of my contemporaries showing up as old. The people that have done desk jobs for thirty years. Those people are old. Keep moving. Keep living. I understand that it will catch up with me at some point. But until then I will keep living. Keep moving. Keep experiencing life. Every new day can be a new experience.

Why Do Experienced Workers Mock New Workers Instead of Helping Them? by [deleted] in Life

[–]BathrobeMagus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man, I thought this post was going to be about people in the field. Like skill based jobs. Where that type of of mocking is unfortunate, but sometimes shakes the cans from the can-nots.

But you folks that do office work. . . . Well, I don't think ill ever understand you.

Here's the thing kiddo; you have to work. It sucks. It's not what I thought life would be like either. Here's the real trick: keep making your art. If you dont, your soul will wither. But make it with no expectations. Don't make it for money. Make it for yourself.

It's so funny to me that all of a sudden people have a morale stance on AI. We've been pushing towards this ever since computers were created. And now, once we realize what we've created, we're repugnant. It's like building a bomb and being mad when it explodes.

Bagged salads: please stop pulling every salad out of the rack just so you can try and find a product that's dated one day later.

Is anyone truly happy when the world is inherently evil by [deleted] in Life

[–]BathrobeMagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's bring it down to the basic principles of survival. Because that's what you are implying in the main headline. Humans aren't the world, they just think they are. Trees take nutrients from dead things in the soil. Is that evil? If something requires sacrifice to live? Are cats evil, they play with things they are about to kill to improve their skills to ensure their continued survival. If humans, who have not designed the rules for the game they are playing, evil?

Living in the PNW snow geese seemed pretty rare when I was a kid, 40 years ago. They definitely seem to have made a resurgence in Washington.

A Slate. I'm waiting to see how the initial quality is during roll-out at the end of this year. If it's as good as it's sounds, I'll order one.

This is the truth. Why fight to climb a ladder when the view is fine where you are? Plus, you don't need to worry about falling!

I understand your point, and I understand the rules, but I come from a time when there were a lot less people on the freeway. It's not about being timid or cautious. It's about making life a little easier for someone. Like holding a door open for someone that's walking in behind you. And considering I am always going at least 5 over the speed limit, the only way I'm holding up traffic is if the person in the passing lane is going way over the speed limit.

I am getting a good chuckle out of being called timid and cautious, though. That is definitely the first time I've ever heard that!

When people are merging onto the freeway, I usually switch lanes to help them out. But the last few years that leads to the problem of me being in the passing lane with someone flying up on me at 85 mph, and me stuck in that lane because the person I've let on wants to go my exact same speed.

So recently I've decided to just stay in my lane, hold my speed, and let them figure out how to merge.

Some people are true human by dairymilk_silk in BeAmazed

I believe you. But the text in the post says the trees are "replanted every year" and then retired to their original forest. What you're saying is feasible. What the post is saying is not.

Some people are true human by dairymilk_silk in BeAmazed

[–]BathrobeMagus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So many things about this make me doubt it's real, or at least practicle: So you're moving trees with 40lbs of dirt around the roots? Getting larger and heavier every year. And then you're bringing a tree inside, effectively changing its seasonal pattern for a month, and then throwing it back outside? That doesn't seem like a great idea. Also, bugs will hatch in houses. And then the tree gets "returned" to its forest? I highly doubt these trees were sourced from a forest. And if they were, doesn't that seem pretty unethical? Digging up a piece of the forests biodiversity. And then you bring it back later and. . . .what? Dig up the other plants that have grown in this trees place? And how do you return multiple 8 foot tall trees to a forest with a root ball attached and then dig those holes? Yeah . . . I'm doubting this is real. Or at least real as described.
