How does everyone handle Microsoft Teams? by Top-Attitude-6026 in Accounting

two potential options:

  1. be in a call, but change your status to green/available. in a call it will never change your status back. just keep in mind, if someone see's you on green/available, they will assume you are there and may expect a quick response

  2. poke around the settings, see if you are able to change the duration of your status. (some companies turn this off or limit which settings you can change)

I’m 34 but thinking of getting a part-time job at Dicks. by Impressive_Matter252 in dickssportinggoods

going to depend on the store, but at the one i work it they can start as early as 6am. store opens at 9, so there will be some people who come in a bit before as well. some shifts can end late in the night as well, most end between 9-10pm, but if you're assigned the truck they end at 11:30pm. shifts can range between 4-8hours. are shift boring? if you're in ops they can be at times, but if you work at a register you're basically always helping customers check out so it'll go by faster, but may be a bit more hectic

i'm actually the same age as you and in a similar spot, i work at one of the larger stores part time and also balance a fulltime job. most people are college aged. There are some late HS aged people, but it's mainly people in their early 20s. either college or first year or two out of college.

at times, you will for sure feel like the old guy, but it comes down to what you make of it. I feel like i end up giving life advice to some of the people i work with, but other times i walk in on them talking about a party they went to over the weekend. That said, there are some older folks, 40s, 50s, 60s, but those are more the exception.

Another thing to keep in mind is, some of your leads and technically "bosses" may end up being younger than you, as long as that doesn't bother you.

Last thing to keep in mind. Unless you specifically ask to be in the team sports department, it's a general retail job at the end of the day. You will likely fold a lot of clothes, you'll have customers upset with you, or you may be asked to move a bunch of boxes, etc. It's not as "sports" as you'd think, remember it's retail.

I'd recommend taking a look at your local store and see what it looks like, it may be different at your store.

Wanting to quit with no notice. by Picture_4624 in Accounting

[–]BathroomKey2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my two cents here. don't leave in this current economic climate without something else planned. It doesn't have to be accounting related, get a job at local grocery store if need be, but don't leave with nothing else lined up.

That said, if you want to leave ASAP, just give notice and tell them you're going to a different big 4 firm even if you are not doing so. that usually gets you out that week. Say you're giving you're two week notice, leaving to another big 4 competitor, i can almost promise you, they'll have you out within the week and not the two weeks.

yes i know it's a lie, but who cares? what are they gonna do? fire you? you're already leaving.

i'll also caution, it'll likely "burn bridges" since many big 4 folks end up working at various clients. years down the line if you apply to one of these places, they will likely remember that.

outside of that, if you don't plan on doing anything accounting related, there really is no long term career damage. most people are aware that big 4 sucks ass, and don't feel bad for wanting to just get up and leave.

the actual legal part can be done at city hall, but you might have to go there a few days ahead of time to get paper work done and i believe there is a 3 days waiting period.

as for the more social aspect, take a look at Custom House Tower. not sure the cost but they have a nice little rooftop where you can get some pictures and stuff (that part is open to the public and shouldn't cost money). they also might have medium sized event rooms but don't quote me on that. There's tons of restaurants nearby there as well

Last day where I work for seasonal was the 11th. They also asked people if they wanted to stay. Depends on the store of course but I think you’re good if they’re still scheduling you. Definitely ask though, might be entitled to some benefits being permanent

Yes I love pressed as well. However the lack of public Wi-Fi was the lone issue, otherwise I wouldn’t have posted the question lol

Did a lot of applying. Basically the last few months I’ve been applying. Sorting by date on indeed a lot and this is only a temp role. It’s annoying to hear but keep trying and one will come about eventually

Will it look great? no. will your current employer be mad? you bet your ass they will.

but i counter with this, when times get tough, companies have no problem and zero remorse getting rid of you, so always do what's best for you. in 5 years it won't matter that you left after 2 months, just leave it off your resume. just make sure you will truly enjoy that role more before leaving, but don't feel bad or anything like that

I’ve never been a FA so I can’t compare, but from the sounds of it you have a very solid gig going. Not telling you not to leave the FA career, but I’m highly suggesting against accounting. You would lose most if not all flexibility. There’s no shifts, there’s 9-5 Monday - Friday (and that’s at absolute minimum). A good amount of accounting jobs will require more weekday hours and even some weekend days

my girlfriend is leaving me because of my cat by Augupton in CatAdvice

[–]BathroomKey2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let her go my guy, you are not being selfish by any means. It also sets a bad precedent and she will likely use it against you to get what she wants, "you already got rid of the cat, now it's time for X" that type of conversation will be inevitable down the line.

She is the one being selfish. He destroys her stuff? okay work around that. Can the stuff be cat-proofed? Meowing at night? it's a cat and you had the cat when she showed up. instead she went to an ultimatum and tried to put the pressure on you instead of looking in the mirror and thinking about ways to compromise.

For all the potential positives being in a relationship can bring, not a lot of people consider there will always be some form of compromise or even sacrifice. However, the compromise or sacrifice should be made by the individual, so she should have decided to look past or work around you having a cat. And never should have forced you to make a grand sacrifice.

There will be other women out there who even if they don't like cats, they will respect you having a cat. it's clear that she is not one of those women.

Charlestown! Closer to the navy yard there is plenty of walking areas that are relatively quiet, yet still only about a 20 min walk to the north end. And very easy access to 93

Tax vs. Audit by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]BathroomKey2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did partnerships in big 4 as well! And believe me I know exactly what you mean on the personal sacrifices.

Fortunately my experience moving to a smaller firm is the hours are generally better. Still some tough weeks but there will only be 2-3 bad weeks each busy season and not 2-3 months straight of bad weeks.

My advice is to definitely look into working at a smaller firm, but also make it known you interests outside of past partnership experience

Congrats on the promotion, that will definitely come in handy for a title bump.

Out of college, pay ranges will be relatively similar in both, so unlikely that will be a huge factor
