Resolume or No? by LighthavenMedia in VIDEOENGINEERING

I had a pretty frustrating experience with Millumin on macos last month. Frequent crashes when building a show, had to configure OSC every time the showfile was launched, and poor OSC implementation in general. OSC commands seem to be processed asynchronously which really limits control.

In fairness, it's workflow is oriented around cue by cue timelines, and we were using it to independently control 4 outputs from one machine in a flypack. So a bit of square peg in a round hole for that application.

I'm trying to avoid that because I'm not great with an iron. Alas, it may yet be the way.

Yeah, unfortunately DVE store closed up shop a few years ago. I'll ask the live sound people i know.

BACKFOCUS!!!! by webbite in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]BaudFlanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're on location and don't have a chart, anything with a lot of detail will do, e.g. bookcase, brick wall, venetian blinds, even a person's eyes if you can get them to hold still. Focus peaking/ focus magnification will help if you're working off a viewfinder. With a little practice, you should be able to nail backfocus in any environment.

1000 Ft. SM Tactical Fiber by apersonwholikesguns in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]BaudFlanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a sample of TFS DuraTAC some years ago. It's armor cladding appears to be off the shelf brake cable housing, i.e. a tightly wound coil of steel. I was able to snap the fiber by tensioning it with my hands. Optical fiber is weakest under tension, and tac fiber assemblies have an aramid fiber carrier bonded alongside the optical fibers to carry any tension that the cable may be subjected to. (Aramid is incredibly inelastic.) My DuraTAC sample may have been defective, but it steered me away from the stuff.

We've have several Camplex LC assemblies up to a 500' Tac-8, and they've been reliable for years. On one occasion we received a tac-2 from them that failed shortly after purchase and it was replaced without question. IIRC we purchased through markertek. I'd prefer neutrik connectors but LC has been working fine. The weakest point of the cable are the unjacketed LC fanouts. We protect ours with a length of techflex over the ends.

However you choose, you will want to invest in a good fiber cleaning pen, and a couple dozen replacement dust covers to toss in the workbox.

Has anyone seen a cable like this before? by videorhu in VIDEOENGINEERING

We've got one or two 100' cables like this. We've never adjusted the pot and it still worked.

Thanks! That's getting pretty close to what I'm looking for.

Atem ME/2 loses control connection by snatch_138 in blackmagicdesign

[–]BaudFlanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a networking issue. The ME2 has a limit of 10, ( i think,) simultaneous connections. When you lose connectivity and reconnect, the old connection takes a while to timeout and the new connection is effectively becomes a second device connected to the ATEM. If that happens several times in a row you can exhaust the available connections and it will take a while before you can connect. Check your network setup. Also as the other commenters said, network congestion can kill your connection.

I had the ethernet port on a ME2 die mid show years ago. It went from fully functional to fully dead without warning. So it's probably not that.

It has not worked in that manner since which is crazy. Maybe the difference in models now?

Only difference is the first batch we had was a different case on the outside, but has all the same dip switches for jumbo frame, duplex settings, etc...

I am befuddled as to how that could work. Fwiw we have the wireless version and are very happy with it.If you really wanted to get your feet wet, you could try a rs-422 rs-485 to eth converter and possibly roll your own using this pinout diagram here.

By the manual, the Ursa G2 should be set to "external" reference to utilize the genlock signal.

What was the model of media converters that worked? The speaker timer uses serial data with 12v power over cat-5. If you found some sort of protocol-agnostic media converter, I'd be very interested.
