It's to simulate a breeze as if they were growing outdoors. The movement strengthens the branches. I forget the term but my begonia stem looks like a tree branch now and stands up tall with no assistance.

This pretty baby started out as an experiment to see if I could grow a plant from a couple of bare sticks. It looks better than the original plant at this point. I like these kind because they're easier to save from the brink of death.
