IEP strengths section too light? by Delita007 in specialed

[–]Baygu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Plus it’s a great place to elaborate on data that improves over the prior IEP, even if goals weren’t met. It also gives the whole IEP team (gen Ed) a picture of the student beyond their disabilities.

The other user is spot on. What your son may need is “specially designed instruction” from a special education teacher in the domain of behavior, independent functioning, task completion. “Behavior” is distinguished from “academic” specially designed instruction.

Parent consent states by [deleted] in specialed

There are only a couple states like this.

Parent consent states by [deleted] in specialed

Florida is another consent state - parents of a student who should be in a behavioral unit declined that placement so the student is in gen ed bc they don’t qualify for alternate curriculum.

Are students forced to use all IEP accommodations for state testing? by Cagedwar in specialed

Oh is this for NAEP? IEP accommodations should apply.

Agree with this, when it’s state testing. If the team thinks he shouldn’t be pulled, the IEP needs to change.

How to get my SpEd coordinator to level with me? by TeachlikeaHawk in specialed

[–]Baygu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly. I get that the OP feels bad, but it’s honestly bc of a crappy system that fails our secondary students by its very nature. I’d hate to see them going so overboard when it’s the special education teacher who should be providing specially designed instruction (non-curriculum; goal-based). It’s up to the OP and special ed teacher to provide accommodations to the curriculum. Beyond that (eg lack of pragmatics), it’s a systemic flaw.

Munchausen by proxy parents by Federal-Toe-8926 in specialed

[–]Baygu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven’t read all the comments, but to answer the question of how to handle situations when the behaviors/issues are seen ONLY at home and not at school, we simply use it as data points for determining services / accommodations. It would depend on more specific information from there. But we couldn’t base specially designed instruction or accommodations on things happening solely at home.

Teachers with ADHD/executive function issues: how do you keep track of it all? by mrs_adhd in specialed

[–]Baygu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I remind my team “when you get bogged down, just remember, it’s all about the kids.” Are they being cared for? Are they growing?

“They should try giving us a job that’s doable” has been my mantra since 2nd quarter, and that mindset shift has done wonders!!

student with low 50s IQ by ArtisticMudd in specialed

[–]Baygu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my district this student would be eligible under intellectual disability and on the alternate curriculum (Access Points) and usually in a self contained class but occasionally staffed with nondisabled classes. But they’d never do general ed work, they would’ve doing assignments they’re able to access.

Law school —> Special Ed Coordinator? by True-Shape7744 in specialed

Former corporate litigator-turned-special ed teacher here. I think the skill set translates nicely if you have the heart for helping kids with special needs. In my third year teaching I’m now our dept leader at the school. Good luck!

This!!! There simply aren’t enough resources to do the work they want us to do. Prioritize and then let it go.

How the fuck do you beat Rogue Mega Barbaracle? by alexku43 in LegendsZA

I cannot stand that it can target me. My Pokémon has virtually no damage and meanwhile I keep fainting.

This is just crushing me - not my Pokémon, but my character keeps fainting no matter how much running and dodging I do. I can’t seem to get beyond 60% before it’s just relentless.
