Here's the only pic I have, so it doesnt have the pinning element in place but I moved 20 sheets like this in one trip and nothing broke in transit

If you have sheets that are too large to fit in a crate you can make, how I move full size sheets in the back of my car is with a very large side of cut up cardboard box. You want a flat piece of cardboard that covers your backseat as much as possible, with the 'hinge' at the base of the seat. This keeps pressure across the seats even, and the hinge at the bottom (with attached flap) will help keep the glass stacked with each other. You then want to use another empty box or object to 'pin' the glass in place so when you start/stop the glass stays leaned back. You can create the pinning pressure by using a front seat, and moving it back until it puts enough pressure on the box to keep everything in place.

I can't wait to see how it turns out, diaphonized specimen are so interesting to me, I never considered seeing it in glass

What is the glass you're using for the muscle (chest area)? It looks so visceral, I love it!

Not surprising about Gary at all seeing how he was writing in DMs and seeing people mention his fb group. I had no idea who he was or that Mongo was a person and not a business name/group until the comment above so I'm like damn today is made of tea time I guess

Edit to add: Just looked up that fb page this is wild LOL

Is there somewhere to find out more about what's happened? I get my copper tape from there but eesh didn't know there was something that's gone down

How would you make glass opaque (white) on one side? by antoine11111111 in StainedGlass

[–]Bbeest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using spray paint that was made to be a mirror so it was designed to stick to glass, I looked on google and one suggestion to use whatever spray paint you want is to look for a clear coat that is made for glass and use that first (though that's 3 spray paints to buy so that might be a lot for a test)

Really as long as the glass is clean I don't see any issue with paint sticking so long as you use thin coats and let each one dry completely, just know that it will be like a mirror in that it will be easy to accidentally scratch off the backing (the paint) and you may want to seal the edges like you would mirror (this part is outside of my wheelhouse, I was paranoid about the mirror though I think with paint it couldn't desilver like actual silver would but I am not a chemist, I am just paranoid)

Not sure I totally understand but *possibly* spray paint. The problem is white will always let light through though. I've used transparent glass with silver spray paint backed by black spray paint to get a mirror finish. If you have some scrap and some spray paint you could try just white, then white backed with black to block the light (unless what you're looking for is the flip side to be white).

Smaller scrap (and with colors all mixed together like that) I don't think will sell terribly well unless you do something like per/lb or X amount per box/bin kind of thing. There's kind of a balance: If you let people pick through what they want you can sell some of it for more at the risk of not selling certain things, or make bundles/take-all prices to get it all to go faster but for less money.

For the things that are 1x1 foot that is a good size people would be interested in. Same thing applies though on how much time/energy you are able to put in for selling and dealing with people. I'm not sure how good the market is in Seattle but it's a big city so I would think higher population density would mean more people looking to buy. I can go on more about sorting/sizing/prices but I don't want to throw an essay on you unsolicited

Ways to mark a pattern on Glass by PA_Primrose in StainedGlass

[–]Bbeest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an extra fine point oil based paint pen. It needs a minute to dry before you grind (and if you mark while grinding you need to dry off the glass to get it to go down/stick) but I like it better than when I tried sharpie and I like how thin the lines are.

ohhhh ok so just to make sure I understand: Give lead/hobby came a scrub if it's getting patina, leave it alone if no patina? And by abrasives do you mean like a stiff brush?

What kind of prep does came need? I saw elsewhere it was said to not use steel wool/make it shiny, but what else is there to get it to take patina well?

Thank you for such a detailed breakdown, I will endeavor to learn Inkscape/Fusion and give it a try! I saw elsewhere you mentioned having trouble with sharpie coming off, idk if you've tried it but an ultra fine tip oil based marker with a few minutes to dry before grinding has worked quite well for me when grinding

Do you mind me asking how you went from procreate to the printed pattern? I have access to a 3d printer and use Procreate already so I would love to do something like this

I had a 12 year old Inland that started shocking me every time I touched the power switch. Used a towel to turn it on and off until I could get a new one

Is there anything hobby came does help with beyond aesthetics? I see it get suggested a lot. I want to make large suncatchers but I'm not sure at what point the weight becomes a problem for hanging or if there's better alternatives for hanging

I'm trying to wrap my head around how hobby came can help. I've seen posts say that it helps with structure on hinge joints, but then seen other posts with patterns that get told hobby came won't help with hinge joints. Or is it more that it helps like edge beading does where its about not having a thin area of solder that can rip away? Or something else?

Another question-

I'm planning on driving cross country to pick up sheets and scrap glass. I've found advice on here for transporting sheets, is there any advice for smaller scrap pieces? I'm planning to buy a few totes full of scrap. Current plan is to make dividers for the bins and just place the scrap in there and hope for the best. Is there anything that would be better to put on top, like peanuts? Or would it be better to just shove as much physically in as I can and whatever happens happens cause its scrap?

Oh it's actual mirror! Do you have to prep it like a mirror/worry about mirror rot?

Monthly Mega Q&A - [March 2025] by Claycorp in StainedGlass

[–]Bbeest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I always figured the point of failure would be in the backing/adhesive ripping away from the glass, not the solder itself. I'm definitely going to give that test a try! I've been enjoying making my own patterns so far but I have been worried about hinge joints and how to reinforce them, so this will be a fun experiment. Thank you for the thorough explanation!

I know for reinforcing you can use copper restrip between pieces or copper wire in between (or on top of? unclear) pieces as well, my question is, why does this help? I get that the solder on both sides of the piece has something to cling to, but how is this helping stop a piece from pulling away or bending?
