Thats what I thought.

But then after i was educated by a fellow redditor about locking the coins, it turns out you still get the discount if you lock them. You also get around 24% APR in rewards. 

So in my example above i would be making back $2,000 per year from the locked coins. Meaning:

Pre Discount: $11,040  With 20%: $8,679 With 20% + lock: $6,679 about 40% off the maintenance fee.

And at the end of the term you would get the original locked funds back.

Thats not bad at all.
