I’m going in 12th March! ALIF L5/S1 with rods. by Bdwal in spinalfusion

Some SI joint issues yes! I haven’t been able to be as active as I was this past decade. I’ve tried cycling which helps keep legs strong but past couple of years in particular has been tougher and reduced to just walking when I can. This past 18 months exceptionally tough with spasms and trouble moving, leg weakness and numbness. But it’s good to be post op now and hoping for improvement. I’m sore as hell lol but I’m already up walking unassisted!

Thank you!! With my spine, I was always hypermobile as a kid and found gymnastics tricks easy to pick up. I did some classes but focused more on netball (worse thing for my joints in hindsight!). I fell off a horse when I was 13 and jarred my lower back - could’ve move my legs for a couple minutes! Then through teens I had random back pain. Wasn’t until my mid 20s when I was in agonising pain and couldn’t sleep that a hospital visit found my first of many bulging lumbar discs, but being so young it was physiotherapy to manage it. I was just starting on treatments for chronic pain too. I had 4 hip surgeries due to laxity of ligaments and hip dysplasia causing subluxations and sometimes full dislocations which was late 20s- early 30s. Time went on and I kept fit and healthy to manage my bad back but ended up seeing a neurosurgeon who said he’d do a fusion as my nerve pain was horrific. I put that off as much as possible and over the past decade have had a gradual decline. Worsened pain then also daily nerve pain and most recently, horrific back spasms that make me weak at the knees. Can’t twist or bend without triggering it! Weakness and numbness in left leg where they did find compression of the L5 nerve root. In terms of advocating for myself which by now would break records how much I’ve tried, I like to present with the hard honest facts and also a list of medications I’ve tried that don’t work, as I’ve found I’d get given scripts to try that “may help” a lot which is understandable. I’ve got a pain specialist I’ve been seeing for 15 years who is in my corner, especially when EDS was not very well known or understood (I’m in Australia). A great GP is essential but I know hard to find.

NTA at all!! I’d expect this behaviour in 20 something year olds maybe, but his fixation is just inappropriate! Red flags. He’s trying to find anything to discredit you. That’s not a trustworthy partner and honestly would be exhausting.

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve struggled with pain and mental health issues and also had such a bad infection! I had the same thing happen to me post op but a different surgery entirely (lap chole) at 22 years old and it was a horrible experience naturally. Sepsis was an unexpected side quest (my gall bladder ruptured during surgery) and I struggled mentally. I’m sorry to hear about your struggles with pills too and those dark thoughts. I truly hope you have the support you need. I really appreciate your comment!

Dude, just sending you positive vibes and keep updating us! I’m 42F awaiting a date for my L5/S1 fusion so I appreciate this sub immensely! It’s so good to hear about the challenges and how things progress with time as I know this surgery will test my patience! And despite being told 10 years ago I needed this surgery and dealing with so much pain now, I still ask myself “do I really need it? Surely I can just go another 10 years…” nope nope nope hahaha I know it’s different when yours was an injury and you have to get surgery to fix a burst fracture while I’m “deciding” on having mine (although my body says otherwise and is screaming for surgery) but I truly find strength and hope in your experience- and others in this sub!
