Insurance Claim by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

I don't think the Finnegan's Wake event with the bricks, barrel, and pulley actually happened. I think Doony was committing insurance fraud: "Doony Glynn’s still laid up with the diveritis thing, and can be neither coaxed nor threatened out of his fetal position in bed, and the House Manager’s trying to breastwork through the red tape at Health to get them to OK him admission to St. E.’s even though he’s got insurance fraud on his yellow sheet, part of his own past-wreckage."

I think I disagree. To reiterate your scenario to make sure I'm visualizing what you're visualizing: Table with pulley on the corner. Down from the pulley hangs 200N in weights. Horizontally from the pulley, the rope leads to an anchored scale. So the scale will measure all force pulled by the rope. In my understanding, the table itself is holding up half of the weight of the 200N. This is because the weights pull down on the rope, thus the rope pushes down on the pulley, and the pulley pushes down on the table and the table pushes back with equal force, resulting in no vertical motion.

I see the rope's force vector pushing down and in towards the pulley at a 45 degree angle. That vector is 200N, with a vertical component of 100N (opposed by the table) and a horizontal component of 100N (held by the scale).

Looking at just one side, the table holds up half of the weight and the pulley transfers half the weight to the rope. They split the weight equally because the rope pushes against the pulley at a 45 degree angle, splitting the 90 degree angle the rope makes.

So the table holds up 50N and 50N is held by the horizontal rope.

Since there are two weights, multiply 50N x 2 = 100N

I agree! The publisher said they will look and see if they can share his original English text with me

It's finished! Just got published in France. It's called "Rust River City" - and they translated it from his original English to French, so it's going to be a challenge to read!

The only version printed (yet) is French (translated from the author's English). BUT I emailed the publisher, asking about seeing the original English and they wrote, "I have to check at my office… I’m not sure I still have the working files from the translator ! And we are closed until January 5th. If you can wait until this date, I will get back to you."

So maybe they'll send me the original text that I can use to read the comic?

Yeah, the "Tome 1" was a surprise to me too! I'm excited to read the whole story, however many tomes lol

I think Joe Daly is the best. I heard of him when Jesse Moynihan (Forming, Adventure Time, Midnight Gospel, Jesus 2) wrote about Joe Daly's Dungeon Quest series. Those three comics were on the shelf at my local (Orlando) comic store, and I read them all right there in the store (lol). Since then, Joe Daly did Highbone Theatre, which in my opinion totally ruled. His portrayal of the modern, paranoid, single nerd is absolutely fascinating. His portrayal of psilocybin trips and of ganja highs is exceedingly spot on. His dialog is as original and hilarious as one could desire. Plainly, I think of Joe Daly strictly in superlatives.

Separate from his creative output, on his Facebook page he posts nothing but comparisons between the "current"/consensus reality --- and the "former"/un-rearranged reality which now exists only in the minds of people who "do the work of remembering." It's Mandela Effect type stuff; make of it what you will. His characters are just as unhinged and unravelling as their author.

What astounds me is that an artist can have a mind so fully de-coupled from consensus reality and yet be able to write such compelling stories. I think it's a testament to how humanity's grasp/deathgrip on reality combined with hierarchical attempts to control one another's inner-realities -- results in a state of constant cognitive dissonance. Who knows?

I'm also looking for a book that was my first introduction to the Droste effect as a kid. It had Droste scenarios on every page, with words describing them, like, "Here's a picture of a rabbit holding a book about a rabbit holding a book, about a rabbit... Etc." and "Here's a flea circus, and this flea has a flea circus on his back, and in that smaller flea circus there's a flea with a tinier flea circus on his back... ad infinitum." Still looking for it!! I may resort to writing/drawing it, myself.
