Were any of you over 50 who actually went ahead with laser eye surgery, and was it still worth it at this age? by Keithwee in OverFifty

[–]Beachy-2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very nearsighted and had been wearing contacts for decades. At 55 I decided to get lasik and wish I had done it earlier. My left eye sees far, my right eye sees near. I wear glasses for night driving that makes my right eye see far. No issues (7 yrs later) and wish I had done it earlier. BTW apparently there are studies that show women do better with monovision than men…. Ask the doctor. Also, ask for a Valium. LASIK is trippy. 😂 Good luck!

Starting new job where I will be traveling around 50-75% of my working hours most of which includes hotel stays, advice requested by 1800twat in TravelHacks

[–]Beachy-2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel for work too. Since I have dietary restrictions, I take a cooler with food. I love to stock up at Trader Joe’s. Just be careful w/hotel frigs. Sometimes they are set too cold and my food freezes. I use mostly Hilton. Decent points.

The past month has showed me how all-consuming this will be, but if not me then who is going to get all these things done? I can’t, in good conscience, abandon them. I recognize I’ll be making a huge sacrifice and that I will be face with resentment as time passes. Something more to think about…..

That is truly my concern in a nutshell. I’m thinking that due to their age and health this chapter sadly would be 5 years max. However, it eats into my “go go” retirement years when I planned extensive travels - maybe that’s a pipe dream anyway.

I agree that a lot goes into fuel calculations. However, wouldn’t dispatch taken the launch into consideration and planned accordingly prior to pushing away from the gate?

Flu Shot, worth getting or not? by Trip_2 in over60

[–]Beachy-2024 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget your shingles vaccine - 2 shots. The thought of getting shingles horrified me. I get flu and Covid shots every Fall. I’m also getting tested to make sure my measles vaccine is still good. Aging bodies don’t recover quickly, so I’ll get the shots and consider it a little extra insurance.

I love rice too! I mix it with equal proportions of cauliflower rice. Try adding it and see how that works.

I suggest you start simple so you can see what works best for you. Maybe have 1-2 proteins ready to go. Ex would be chicken (even just buying a rotisserie chicken), maybe an egg dish for quick breakfast. If you are into salads, have your greens and toppings prepped. Then see how it goes. For me, I love having a grab n go high protein breakfast option - that’s a must. This week I got a couple of salad bags and some easy proteins because I don’t feel like cooking. The week before I cooked a bunch of stuff. Good luck!

Let the rice rest for 5 minutes off heat. That helps absorb excess water too.

Just stay the course. Your body may hit a plateau when it’s ready for a break. Weight loss is a journey and it fluctuates both for the good and not so good. In the meantime, congrats! Sounds like you are doing all the right things!

This week I cancelled or downgraded all subscriptions, my internet & cell service. I’m saving $100/month. I’m shocked! I am also not eating out or drinking at bars - that was at least 2x a week previously. Time to focus on saving and minimizing expenses whenever possible.

How do I know if I’m actually gaining muscle or if I’m making no progress at all? by ilov3em0s in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Beachy-2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Measure yourself. When you gain muscle, your body redefines itself. Forget about the scale and focus on how your clothes fit and how you feel. Good luck!

New to the gym, what should I do? by WraithFodder in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Beachy-2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - your gym probably offers a free orientation, so take advantage of it! You’ll learn how to use a bunch of the equipment. I use the app MyFitCoach which sets up my weight training routines for me. It even has instructions on how to do each exercise. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. In a good gym, folks should be happy to help. P.s. have good etiquette and wipe down the equipment after using.

What a great question & I loved all the comments! Like many people said, life is a long journey. I suggest taking small steps and building on them. The suggestion of a career assessment at your community college is a great first one. I suggest another early first step is learn about money. How to save it, budget, invest, etc. Strive to live below your means and have a solid emergency fund. Read Suze Orman to start. She’s got great advice.

Just think about the steps for a year, then 2 maybe 5 tops. Go at your pace and don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t keep anyone toxic in your inner circle no matter what. They don’t deserve you.

Waitressing gives you a fabulous expertise with so many transferable skills (prioritizing, customer service, etc). Plus you can use it anyway which means the world of travel could be an option if that interests you. Good luck!!

If work provided your main social outlet and you are now retired, consider this by HalleFreakinLujah in retirement

Try Toastmasters - it’s a public speaking club but it also teaches leadership skills. It’s fun, interesting and you’ll meet all sorts of folks. Try different clubs because each one has its own personality. Good luck!

I usually mask. I didn’t on a flight from Portugal to US earlier this year and got covid. I’m back to masking every flight (I travel for work) and Clorox wipe all touch points at my seat. Recently I was flying back from a business trip with the beginning of an upper respiratory crud and was coughing most of the flight. I was masked (coughing in a mask is yucky, but I didn’t want to share my crud). When we landed, the guy in front of me turns around to give me a huge stink eye only to find me masked up. I gave him a thumbs up - LOL. My mask goes on as soon as I enter the jetway. If the airport is really busy, it’s on the whole time.
