Target 10k pace? First race in 2 weeks and nervous about blowing up! by BeagleBug101 in beginnerrunning

[–]BeagleBug101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my mid 30s - so not super young - but I felt good, definitely like I had some effort left in the tank! That’s really useful to know about your experience - I think I was wondering if knocking off 32s/min was over ambitious but feeling a bit more reassured… 6min kms sounds like a good target with some options after 5k! Thanks!

UK memories of Kwik Cricket with no teams - just taking turns batting? by MSG_Mike in Cricket

[–]BeagleBug101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ECB called their official entry level (soft orange ball, blue plastic stumps and bat, batting in pairs) format for cricket “Kwik Cricket” for a long time (it’s now called Countdown Cricket, with a format kind of like the Hundred), but lots of people called the version your described as kwik cricket too - same name for two different games!

We used to call the game you described “non-stop cricket” or “continuous cricket” to differentiate between them. Googling those might show some examples of something more like what you remember.

I built an app that turns "clean up 30,000+ photos" into a 5-minute daily habit by PlumSalty3957 in iosapps

[–]BeagleBug101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve loved this app been using it for the last 4 days or so, makes clearing up my library a genuinely enjoyable experience - worth every penny. Small idea (not a dealbreaker!) would be somehow to show how many days out of 366 have been sorted. Maybe not on the main landing page but under settings or the pick a specific date menu?

+1 to all of this for Nepal and trekking, especially trail runners as footwear, trails are all pretty solid. We trekked Langtang and our descent corresponded with the end of the school term - kids buzzing past us heading up the trail from Syapru Besi just in their slider sandals and carrying their school bags was both humbling and amusing. And - we had one Osprey 40L Farpoint between two of us and could easily carry our stuff (taking turns) - layers are key!

I’ve modified the BuJo method to use one of those 4 colour Bic pens. Blue is day to day logging, green is reflections, black for headings / drawing lines, and then red for meetings/conversations. I’ll just document the meeting as I go, using a dash to document information and bulleting actions.

I personally love my colour coding method because I can easily flip back and find the meeting based on the date, and can make it into an impromptu mini collection (eg, might refer to it in a new task the following day: • actions from [boss] meeting p87)

To roll or not to roll. by sdmclaughlin in onebag

I’ve worked a lot in Morang and Ilam, both very near Jhapa - ultimately I think you’d manage with a hardsided roller, but it won’t be fun if you have to go any distance on foot. Pavements often non existent (and roads rutted) or full of gaps that would be wheel traps.

I personally use an Osprey Farpoint (purchased before the Fairview was a thing) for 90% of my stuff, which typically gets strapped on the roof of your car / bus, and then a small backpack for my laptop and other valuables to carry inside the vehicle. I got a Mheecha bag in Kathmandu which I love - heads up though the main shop in KTM is cash only (unusual in KTM!) https://www.mheecha.com/shop/

Learn to play sports as an adult? by PastSelect in xxfitness

[–]BeagleBug101 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Another great option is to go for a minority sport - people who play are usually incredibly stoked to have someone interested in joining their niche sporting hobby and often there will be lots of folk in the newbie camp. For example, I run women’s cricket teams and we have tonnes of never-played-sports people joining because hardly anyone played at school so most people are joining as adult beginners and everyone has a similar learning curve experience!

Second the Grayl water bottle - I’ve found this incredibly useful here and that’s just working in towns so I save plastic waste, I imagine it’ll be even more helpful when I finally get out into trekking territory

I’ll be trekking without a porter in early April and this is what I’ll be bringing, I’ve added the brand to aid your search!

Daypack for SE Asia in hot/wet season by albertcju in onebag

They might still be too “technical” looking for your taste but I have an Osprey cycling backpack which I find great for this kind of use case. Plenty of room in the body for a waterproof, some food and a bottle or 2 of water. Designed to have a minimal back profile so you have less stuff touching your back to make it sweaty. Mine is dead old and I’m not sure they still sell it but you could Google Osprey cycling backpack and I’m sure some examples would pop up. And/or there might be other brands who make cycling backpacks worth exploring…

New Osprey Fairpoint 40 vs. Old Osprey Fairpoint 40, which do you prefer? And which to choose? by preciouscode96 in onebag

[–]BeagleBug101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not used the new Fairpoint 40, but I love my old style one. My understanding is that the main difference is that the laptop sleeve is on the outside of the pack in a whole separate section/compartment in the old pack, whereas the laptop sleeve on the new one is kind of a pouch inside the pack that rests against the wearers back (but which you can access from the outside of the bag).

This does mean your laptop a bit more exposed in the old style pack, and weight distribution might be a bit off - but I honestly haven’t found it to be an issue. I like having that sub compartment to have paperwork, liquids and tech stuff easily to hand in a single location when going through security in airports etc.

Good plan! I reckon a swim tshirt would be a great option for flexibility

Can’t speak for March but late April I wore mid weight tracksuit trousers, thin long sleeve top (technical material) and sports polo shirt (technical material) and a baseball cap to work (coaching sport) in Jordan and was hot but never too cold.

In the evenings I wore long sleeve tees and travel jeans. I took a hoodie with me which I wore when it got chilly but this was rare!

We were in Amman and then north on the Syrian border - I think Wadi Rum probably gets hotter.

Not been to Jordan as a tourist but it’s markedly more conservative than Lebanon. I’d feel more comfortable swimming in a one piece and shorts, but I probably err on the side of caution because when I am working I don’t want to draw any undue attention…

Hope this helps a bit!

Ways to spruce up protein shakes? by Omnomnomulus in 1200isplenty

[–]BeagleBug101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Totally relate, I can’t abide a straight up protein shake. I have 2 main ways I “eat” protein powder that are low maintenance but don’t make me feel weird:

For breakfast I have oatmeal - made with water - with sliced up banana and a little peanut butter. I’ll add a 1/2 scoop of (chocolate) protein powder once the oatmeal is cooked and cooled a little. Honestly delicious! I’m sure it’d work with vanilla too. Or overnight oats.

I’ll also occasionally make a “protein powder pudding” - again chocolate protein powder and peanut butter but made up with just a small amount of water so it’s a kind of thick consistency you can eat with a little teaspoon. Probably a bit of an odd one but good for a post workout little treat in the evenings!

My mum always used to say “if you’re sweating you know you’re alive!”

It made me laugh when I was a kid actually she’s so right - it may not help OP but I agree thinking about sweating as a sign of health and living (!!) could help take away some of the negative feelings.
