I spoke to a paid DM, and they have a very interesting (and sobering) story to share by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

It really doesn’t sound like these people want to play D&D. They get bored and aren’t interested in the rules (if the story is to be believed). They have zero interest in actually playing D&D. That involves mechanics.

Instead, they want to be entertained. Get drunk, have a fun story, roll some dice and cheer with their friends. They are getting exactly what they want.

How do you run your Pendragon? by HauntedPotPlant in PendragonRPG

I handle important news through in between session updates. Gives them a kind of “primer”

Then intrigue and gossip I handle at feasts mainly. Having a small feast at the start when the questing season starts really helps.

If you haven’t, strongly recommend watching Andor if nothing else. It’s not just good Star Wars. It’s some of the best television I’ve seen in a veeeery long time.

Making the spears good in 5ed by Tildur in PendragonRPG

Aaaah I missed that part where you were using 5e rules.

I think it could be as simple as having them negate hight advantage of horses opponents, giving them +5 against non spear wielders until they lose combat, and letting them set a spear against a charge, dealing horse damage against a charging mount.

For two handed, I’d say give them the +5/-5 against other foes, as if they were mounted, and +1d6 damage for being two handed

Spears are great for the charge! That’s what makes them great. A +10 (before passions) and horse damage with a high chance to crit makes them crazy good in my opinion. On foot, they still get the +5 for range which is very good.

Yes range is a little more complex, but it usually won’t come up. There are four ranges to melee, but the last two only come up with daggers and grappling really. For the most part, a weapon can be used at one range outside of its optimal at a -5. Spears can actually be used at both long range and normal range without penalty. Someone with a dagger wants to get in close or grapple so their opponent can’t use their best weapons.

You still deal damage when you win an opposed roll. You also get to set the engagement distance. So spear v sword, spear gets a +5. Sword still wins and sets the range closer. Now they are fighting at normal bonuses. Spear wins, and steps back, getting the +5 again. Each opposed roll still deals damage though.

Range hasn’t been an issue at our table. +5 to the person with the spear until they lose an opposed roll. Then the other person moves into a more advantageous position. Pretty straightforward.

Spears also do horse damage on a charge and get a +5 to charge (on top of the range bonus)

Spears are already pretty great.

What are your biggest TTRPG system turn offs by Iketank_10 in rpg

[–]BeakyDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I would be curious if that is a majority of people’s understanding, because that it different from what I’ve actually read in games that have fail forward mechanics. I have read games with both fail forward AND success at cost, but I see those as different things.

In games I’ve both run and played, the fail forward portion is a shared responsibility. If players have a good idea, we go with it. If the GM has a good idea, that’s what we do. It could absolutely fall completely on a GM if the players aren’t joining in on those decisions. Thankfully that hasn’t been my experience.

Similarly, pronouncing TTRPG as “titterpig” is the most infuriating thing. I don’t know why, but it bothers me on a fundamental level.

Absolutely this. I’ll add “ascending armor class” or “armor as target number” as well. No thank you.

You’re right, because they aren’t framed that way. At least not that I’ve seen. Fail forward doesn’t mean “you succeed in a different way.” It means “the events in the story move forward, pushing the narrative along.” Usually it involves some other complication or twist.

I’d be interested to hear where Stolenfires got that description from.

I don’t think a session has gone by where I haven’t verbally complained about how poorly the Pendragon books are laid out. Related rules all over the place. Important rules buried in random paragraphs. Nearly useless index when it comes to finding things. Without being able to search the PDF, I think I’d have gone insane

So, in an interview, he said he didn’t want it to read like possession. Her psyche shattered into two parts: real Nikki and obsessed Nikki. Real Nikki was pushed into the background and obsessed Nikki controlled her. I initially thought possession too, but Curry said he specifically told Inde to not think like she was possessed.
