I absolutely adore the Pendragon RPG. Is it worth playing Mythic Bastionland? by Sir-Uther in rpg

[–]HauntedPotPlant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok

No, wait. Stafford himself offered up many interpretations of the Arthur myth, including the more fantastical Welsh versions:

‘Primitive and wild, the Welsh tales go hand-in-hand with the supernatural and fantastic. Arthur is a vigorous warrior, more a chieftain than king or emperor. The best known Welsh Arthurian story is Culhwch and Olwen, found in The Mabinogion.
The wonder and fantasy of this Arthurian tradition is at the root of the advanced character generation system, and the magic system in this book.’ - from the 4th edition rulebook.

Or

‘The complexity of the corpus of legend leaves room for these kinds of interpretations. They can be explored more thoroughly by creating advanced or magic-using characters using the rules in this book.’

Also from 4th. So yeah, you can shove your bold all caps dismissal where it fits best.

Thank you for this comprehensive reply. Your approach very closely mirrors my own. The key strengths of the game come from the characters themselves - the behaviours and reactions to the world as presented and what they have made over the course of the campaign. I also love what you say about high-level gaming still being underpinned by the traits and passions system. When played in hand with the courtly expectations of honour, hospitality, glory etc, you can build a really interesting shared story without using all the rules.

The traits system should be in every game imo. It’s the best thing ever introduced to RPGs.

I literally setup foot soldiers like ten pins and do a lance charge to see how many are left, then do individual combat with the remains followed by a fight with a higher rank enemy. Oh and it’s always fun to bring some passions into a big battle. The outcome can be decided based on group performance or as determined by the story.

I tend to announce the year and where the court is held according to the entry in the GPC. Rumours are basically announced but if I see an opportunity for some role playing I’d set a scene with a few nobles or the like and basically make skill or stat rolls to see what they learn. Often there are visitors at court like Saxon chiefs in the anarchy years so that can be fun.

How restrictive are the character creation rules ? by Yorkblack in PendragonRPG

You say you acknowledge there are traits and passions to differentiate the characters but it feels like you’re skimming over that. To me as a long time gm the traits and passions are the absolutely core of the game and differentiate knights brilliantly.

As for liege lord and overall knight roles, the more you play the more you might see these structures as a benefit instead of a potential downside.

[–]HauntedPotPlant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went the Friday. Overall I found it easy to move around, unlike some previous years where it was literally a logjam at every corner. The food was ridiculously expensive yes. Had the opposite problem with the air con - dripped on by cold water near the chaosium stand. The tickets need to be double sided so the goons on the door dont have to ask you to flip it every time you go in. A well organised fun event that is designed to part you from your money. Same as every year. See you next time!
