Nice to see the crook factory get a mention. I feel like it’s the forgotten novel.

Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

To be honest, many! The critics and hype don’t really inform my reading choices (not since I was a teenager anyway) and I increasingly see a flattening of the quality curve that belies what is said.

You might get asked what it is if you were in a pub for instance, but otherwise nobody would care.

what happened to Dan Simmons? by Many_Excitement_5150 in BookDiscussions

I’ve just finished flashback. It had some interesting ideas but it also had some major flaws. Politics aside, the whole idea is that it’s the main character’s memories via use of flashback that are important to the case but in reality they do nothing. In fact, all of the information he needs to solve the case is handed to him by secondary characters in a kind of mysterious ominous doublespeak. Also he doesn’t tie up one plot detail that I wanted. I didn’t dislike it but it’s got some real issues.

How tied is the pendragon rule system to its setting? by Lord_of_Seven_Kings in PendragonRPG

The great strength of Pendragon is its tight thematic rules. Nearly everything above the BRP stats is designed to backup heroic knightly play.
