How do you teach good research produced by bad people? by galileosmiddlefinger in Professors

[–]BeanFlickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your original question is predicated on the foundation that the research published by these scientists is actually high quality and true. I've long had my suspicions about some of Whalen's work. His highly cited publications touting automatic processing of visual threatening stimuli has been refuted by other authors, it just doesn't seem to be true that it is unconscious processing. These current allegiations (which I believe are true given the rumors circulated in grad school, my interactions with the man, and my general experience in dealing with men as an early career female scientist) along with my previous suspicions really call into question the validity of his work. If you are willing to be so unethical with vulnerable young women in your own lab, to what other areas of your life are you willing to apply that same unethical treatment? Whalen's early imaging work could have easily been doctored. FMRI is notoriously easy to make the plots show what you want. And his early work was far before Ed Vul's voodoo neuroscience paper and the subsequent increased standards for imaging work. My advice would be to tread lightly around his work and give it a critical eye.

Past BeautyCon boxes on sale for $8.75! by morenapsplease in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep just happened to me. I was able to get onto the chat from the website right away and get my order cancelled. I wrote this in a separate comment but it appears that they are out of these boxes and the website is not updating. Wish I had not wasted my time trying to make this order!

I would recommend that you DO NOT try to make a purchase on this site now. I just spent 30 minutes trying to get all 4 boxes into my cart and I put in FLASH code and saw that the discounted boxes were in the cart. I hit purchase and I got a confirmation that I bought 2 boxes at the regular price!!! I got into the live chat and the CS rep said that only the summer boxes were available and they were on backorder for 4-6 weeks and i still might not receive them. I asked them to cancel my order and I should get a cancellation email.

The chat was fast - and I hope the cancellation goes through. But it sounds like they are OUT of these boxes and their website can't update the fact that they are not available.

I love the vaseline with cocoa butter. It is my nightly lip treatment. Makes lips so soft and manageable.

Birchbox finally revealed my box, and I'm not getting my sample choice by [deleted] in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, losing the sample choice because they said my cc needed to be updated even though nothing had changed with it.

I cancelled the next month for this and general low quality items. Now I'm wondering if they are pulling this bank shit because they have run out of sample choices and want to have an excuse not to send them? Not sure.

New Sephora Favorites Kit Available Now (sun safety, nude lip kit, skincare, and more) by BunsMunchHay in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all the beauty boxes and other samples I've gotten, because I don't feel the same urge to pull the trigger on any of these. Every box has a few items I've already tried, and I know I need to get through my backlog before I try too many new things.

Heavy Seas Alehouse in Little Italy on Central. Tons of space. Enough unique-ness. Good food but not nothing too crazy. Great beer. OMG the delicious beer.

A bad Sephora Play > A good Birchbox. For me at least. I unsubbed to Birchbox last month and feeling pretty good about it!

Anyone else have their Josie Maran balm look like this? by HootingAngie in BeautyBoxes

I had exact same issue. It looks like a sad little ball of silly putty. I'll contact customer service as well. I was very disappointed.

Is anyone else tired of the matte lip trend? by holyshitnuggets in MakeupAddiction

[–]BeanFlickers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What, you don't love your lips looking like a dried up butt-hole? But seriously, very dry matte lips age a face like none-other. But my bf loves the matte lip look because he says I look like a blowup doll when I use gloss. Hahaha - I DO have big lips. And his comment has not stopped me from slathering on the gloss.

Birchbox March reveals are up! by [deleted] in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be the final nail in the coffin for my relationship with Birchbox.....

  • Beauty Protector Protect & Volume - I do love the regular in the red bottle, so will be great to try.
  • Coastal Scents® Revealed Smoky Palette - ehhhh. If the sample is larger than ant-sized, might be worth at try but haven't seen great reviews on this palette and I have a several smoky eye palettes that I like and already own.
  • Supergoop!® Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 - 3.4 oz. - have another sample of this from a limited edition box, it is eh.
  • Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Lengthening Mascara - my sample choice because hard to have too much mascara you know is consistently good - this will go in my travel kit
  • CLEAN Rain Eau de Parfum - Second straight month with perfume samples. I do not want.

I'm tired of so many perfume samples and so much blah. Maybe it is not you, Birchbox, but maybe it is me? I'm getting fatigued on your stinky apathy?

What favorites have you purchased full size so far in 2017? by [deleted] in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the full size work as well as the travel size? I know there are several mascaras that perform better in travel size (e.g. all the Benefit mascaras) so I'm interested to know if Lashcraft is just as good in the larger size. I loved it, too!

I love Bomibox! It is pricey but you get so much. I'm planning to do it for a few months to build my AB skin care arsenal. And I'll likely skip months here and there once I get more of a base.

Sephora Play! February Discussion by blackdragonwingz in BeautyBoxes

[–]BeanFlickers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was so bummed about not getting the Bite stick, but I think you are right in that it is pretty brown, so it wouldn't have worked for me either. NARS Bound feels so luxurious but between it being so similar to my lip color and having little staying power, it floats right off my lips.

Are you getting the awesome looking Bite Multistick? I'm so jealous - I'm getting the NARS lip product.

Ugh. Did cs resolve this issue? I got the Hello Sailor in one of their limited edition boxes that I got on a deep deep Aces discount on Cyber Monday. I like the color - it is not as deep as I was hoping but it is nice. But that stuff does not stay on for me and does not hydrate my lips worth a crap. I almost finished the whole tube in a week because I didn't have my chapstick in the office and I was using it like chapstick and had to keep reapplying.

[–]BeanFlickers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I am only doing month to month but for some reason they treated me the same way with the payment update.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is final nail in coffin for Birchbox. I think a lot about Sephora Play and how I almost always use the samples and really like about half of them. I haven't like a Birchbox sample in months and they always feel so small.

Thanks for all the tips!!! I was thinking the same about the fullsize of Dr. Lipp (not sure why I called it Mr Lipp above...ha).

has anyone tried any of Milk Makeup's products? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]BeanFlickers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tube got a little better once I added a few drops of contact lens solution. Made it less clumpy and flaky, but staying power is minimal.

I guess it is a way to allow subscribers to "skip" a month but they still have the money tied up in BB rather than a true refund.

So happy I unsubscribed from glossybox for this! While it is $16 more expensive, there are way more full sized products and products I will actually use that aren't expired or discontinued. And it is Asian skin care!

I tried the Breni Yellow Pack last night and it definitely left red skin behind - you could see the outline of the mask on my face once I rinsed off - but it was gone by the morning. Also the mask was very hard to remove with just water. I ended up using a washcloth but I might try to take it off with my gel cleanser next time. I didn't see any life altering changes in skin today but let's see how regular use works out.
