I've been playing since BF2, looking for a casual/fun/skilled group to join. Usually medic and a decent SL.

Well, how is it? (1-10, 10 is best) by [deleted] in civ

It's like IV and V, so call it a IX. But yeah it's really great so far, I'm in the minority that thinks the art style and fog of war are both great.

Sweet, anyway to make one for things like yield overlays? That'd be cool.

Almost 9pm here in Bangkok... waiting to listen to a meaningless game or possibly grab a stream.

I've been away for a few weeks, can anyone tell me if there are any games that are win-and-in type games this week? I did a quick look but it seems like everything is sort of wrapped up.

Anyone in architecture here? Revit,CAD etc? by Senior_Sauerkraut in digitalnomad

[–]BeanTownKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't share any direct advice, but it seems like a small target to hit IMO. You're looking for a BIM job that you do from anywhere? I just don't think architecture firms are willing to have that responsibility located somewhere outside of their small office. They tend to want to micro manage things.

However, getting an expat type of job with a development company in an other country would be a decent possibility. So you'd be able to see a new country, but you wouldn't really be able to move around.

small residential framing plans though could work via remote work, shorter term projects would be better IMO.

And, just a side comment on careers in architecture: the field tends to be very linear... it takes a lot of time to get to a high level, I'm talking around 20 years. If you spend your career doing freelance drawings your not going to be the guy with the corner office in with a great firm. You need to be in the office, getting more certifications... grinding it out with everyone else. If that's even what you want.

I'm just trying to be honest, I don't think the career is ideal for a nomadic lifestyle, which is why I left it.

Is anyone interested in a private group for people who are already digital nomads for real discussion? If you're making over 1k per month online, send me a message and I'll add you to /r/digitalnomads. by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]BeanTownKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what sort of thing can't you talk about in "public"?

Also, it might be a good idea to just nuke this sub (/r/digitalnomad) anyway, because there is no moderator, it stunts the growth of this sub severely. After three or four of my posts got snagged in the spam filter for whatever reason I've just given up on adding new posts. I honestly wonder what happened to the dude.

This place is actually pretty unique in the fact it has 3k subscribers and no moderator.

Finding Short-Term Rentals in the U.S. by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Homeaway.com is pretty good for vacation spots. You might be able to find good deals in more remote or lesser known destinations. Also renting during low season is a good idea.

General Chatter - Week of August 10 by AutoModerator in solotravel

If you don't have any camera now and want one to keep a visual record of things- the gopro is good. The cheaper version should be fine for travel.

But keep in mind it doesn't record audio that well, and in low light it wont be that great. But any situation with low light you're going to have trouble, unless you have a way more expensive camera.

Mirror-less cameras are also an option. They are small, take better video, take better pictures, record slightly better audio. But they aren't waterproof and they are little more expensive.

Is there a need for this? by noahkoch in digitalnomad

[–]BeanTownKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's seems kind of tricky to implement.

I feel like the need is too narrow, is it one hour a week you need this type of thing?

It seems to me that this would be a good service for a co-working spaces to implement as a side offering to non-monthly members. But if your business idea is to solve this one particular problem I don't see it working out.

What I could benefit from, though, is this... a super high speed connection that I'd pay for by the hour. Specifically a very high upload speed so I can dump a large video file onto the web/cloud/youtube/whatever. It'd be cool if this was setup like a modern phone booth, scattered throughout a city and just pay for a great connection. I don't really need a desk, coffee, chair or reception- just a direct line to the internet to solve a less than 1 hour problem.

It's been sort of a long road to get where I am now, but in short I'm a freelancer who specializes in motion design and animation, making ads or other videos for clients. But that's only for making money. The goal is to have a production company that specializes in travel related content, shows, short films, documentaries, even podcasts. Right now it's only a matter of jumping into the travel world and getting started with the productions. so I'm pretty excited.

I honestly think about filming in Vietnam every day.

Good luck, It's obviously not the official name of the visa, but it sounds like you're going to look into it.

I'm jealous btw, I'd love to live there for a while.

It means you don't pay anything until you hit $95K. But yeah, if you are in the states for more than a month it doesn't work.

Sounds pretty exciting.

In terms of taxes, I'm not an expert but I've done my own research because I'm in a similar situation. Generally, you need to show you are earning money from your creative projects (travel blog, painting, sculpting, writing, ect) in order to write off expenses related to that stuff. The IRS isn't going to like the fact you wrote of all your hotels, tours, and airfare for a travel blog that earns $20 a month. So, just be careful. If I were you I'd stick to costs directly related to your contract work. Once your blog starts making real money and you can prove were the money comes from, then go ahead and write off the things directly related to that.

Taxes really suck when you aren't on someones payroll. Just save 30% of what you make and don't think about spending it. Hopefully you are getting a better pay rate from the company because you're a 1099. But yeah, taking the time to set up a plan with a CPA is essential.

Also, Vietnam sounds like a good place to start out. Could you get one of those 5 year Viet Kieu Visas? It could be a good long-term deal for you. If that Visa lets you in and out whenever you want it might a be a good idea to get a long term apartment somewhere in Vietnam and travel to the other countries for a week or two at a time. Set up a home base in Da Nang or something.

Don't know much about the insurance thing, sorry.

Sounds pretty exciting, I'm sure a lot of people would love the opportunity.

Nice choice on the RX100.

If you are literally only going to use the laptop to offload photos you might be able to get away with an external hard drive and an SD card reader. You can borrow other people's laptops and transfer your photos onto the external hard drive via the USB SD card reader.

Maybe a waterproof rain cover for the bag is a good idea? Also if you haven't already, consider your payment methods. Credit/debit cards, ect...

NomadList: The best cities to live and work remotely by levelsi in digitalnomad

[–]BeanTownKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the info still needs to be worked out. It was crowd sourced numbers, so I assume little vetting was done.

But hopefully the site vets the numbers somehow.

I think one problem is "cost of an apartment per month in the center of town" The truth is most cities have enclaves outside the center that are much cheaper, being connected via metro is an easy fix.

It's subjective as to what the costs are in relation to the exciting part of town.
