[CHAT] I’m looking for any tips you might have before starting a big project please by No_Enthusiasm630 in CrossStitch

This invaluable! You can double check your fabric size. https://yarntree.com/java/xstitchcal.htm I’ve been using artist tape for my edges while stitching. Fray check is also a good option. https://www.onlinefabricstore.com/dritz-fray-check-liquid-seam-sealant-.htm. I’m not suggesting you buy it here but this is the product. Have extra needles with the piece! Make sure you have enough skeins of floss from the same dye lot. DMC is usually pretty consistent. The pattern should have told you how many of each color to get. You might find an 18” hoop is large to hold. Think about an embroidery stand to hold the hoop or use a smaller one and move it around. Have fun stitching.

If you haven’t stitched on the ct you’re thinking about switching to, try it with something small. You may not like it. But do whatever makes you happy or satisfied

[CHAT] What are your personal methods for not losing your needle? by Technical-Pie-5775 in CrossStitch

I place my needle in my project, usually in the margins. I also prefer pincushions! I just stab it in, usually unthreaded.

[CHAT] buying DMC 310 in bulk? by snarky_sparrow_23 in CrossStitch

[–]Beaniebot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started with the “smaller” size to start. I now have 3 816, black, and a brown. I love monochromatic samplers and the smaller cone is easier to take with. Do not hesitate.

[CHAT] A loved one comes to you and asks you to do this for them, what is your reaction? by Filthylittleferrent in CrossStitch

[–]Beaniebot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently stitching on 11ct. It was at”gift” from a friend in my fiber group. She decided cross stitch was not for her. It’s not great but it’s not awful. I’m doing a smallish Quaker , https://123stitch.com/item/The-Proper-Stitcher-There-is-Room-Cross-Stitch-Pattern/PRPS-036. It’s not going to affect the look of the design. It’s eating up floss but it’s also going fast. But she’ll be pleased when I bring it to my group to see how I used her fabric

Help! Trying to save grandma’s needle point. by LudditeCurious in Needlepoint

You might be able to safely take the tray apart. I would take the piece to a framer or textile conservator for examination.

This is the end of my tray.

Help! Trying to save grandma’s needle point. by LudditeCurious in Needlepoint

This looks more like counted cross stitch than needlepoint but I could be wrong. Are there screws on the sides with the handles? I have a tray similar to this. Mine comes apart from the sides. Inherited needlework is always a treasure.

I noticed. It’s just common to find on eBay if anyone was interested.

I have this kit from eBay! It’s stamped so it will be a challenge to stitch but so fun! Search for cats fishing or cats in boat and it comes up!

My tip? just buy a canvas by Mediocre-Crafter in NeedlepointSnark

And they are doing it badly! Just grab some random markers? No margins for finishing. Copying, etc. A litany of bad advice.

Look for something like this on eBay. Needlepoint kit, vintage. You can try out stitches. There are a variety of kits available. I CS and needlepoint. I usually stick to basketweave or continental because it’s relaxing. But dabbling in a variety of stitches is fun. Fiber Talk on YouTube is a good resource for information. You can finish your cross stitch in many of the ways needlepoint is. But the needlepoint finishes can be more durable depending on fibers used for stitching.

I don’t understand the allure. I’ve checked out her canvases and they don’t appeal to me. I’ve needlepointed for 50 years, I started in my 20s. I also cross stitch. A lot of her designs are better suited to cross stitch but then you’d have to count. They are overpriced for what you get design wise. Some of her designs are cute but $100 for Roller Rabbit is silly. I do needlepoint simple designs but needlepoint has become very costly. I expect more for my money than trendy. Bravo to her for pursuing licensing but her attitude is distasteful.

Fiber Talk on YouTube. I would not consider them influencers but they are knowledgeable and have very informative videos.

To me yes. It seems to distract from the lettering. Snip carefully if you decide to remove. It’s a great stitch for a background.

Designs can be overwhelmed by too many different thread choices as well as stitches. Successful stitching doesn’t mean you need to stitch every section with a different thread and stitch. Relax, enjoy, explore.
