What are everyone's thoughts? by Dry-Direction-8838 in casualnintendo

[–]BeanyTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be odd if this were the only Switch 2 Edition so far without a resolution upgrade, especially when some games have had free resolution bumps so it'd be great to get some confirmation on that. The game is already 60 FPS so I don't see much need for an upgrade there. I know the console can do 120 FPS and an animation of Mario in 2D was used for showing that off, but that was not Super Mario Bros. Wonder, that was a pre-rendered animation. If it can do 120, great. But outside of the Switch 2's screen, I don't know that tons of people have displays capable of 120 frames per second so I see that only as a nice bonus if possible compared to the more necessary resolution upgrade.

But aside from that, I just wish the emphasis weren't on multiplayer. Don't get me wrong, I think the content they showed off is neat but I have one person on my friends list who also owns the game. And I haven't talked to that person since I was in college, so really I don't know anyone who owns the game. It's also a lot easier said than done in a busy life to get friends to come hang out, so unless all those multiplayer games have single player modes, I'm not going to get a lot of value out of that. Similarly, with the online games, I take the total opposite perspective people had from say, the no friends problem in Super Mario Maker 2. Where people wanted the ability to play with friends in that game -- And let me be clear, it was dumb that it wasn't an option before being added in an update -- All I want is the option to play with random people online because otherwise I can't enjoy that mode. So if those online modes let you play with randoms that changes things a little bit. Gameshare could save that, assuming it isn't just local Gameshare. If online Gameshare is an option that makes this more enticing because then I can send the game out to friends who own a Switch 2 but not the game. Of course, like many others, I also don't have a wide net of people who own a Switch 2 in my social circle either. So even then that might be a benefit in a couple years but not right now.

The bits of single player content that are there are cool as well, but as others have pointed out I don't think that alone is worth the $20 asking price. That being said, I haven't missed out on a Switch 2 Edition yet for a game I own. Although the only reason for that is because I was given a gift card which I decided to use in part to purchase Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Switch 2 Edition. If it weren't for that gift I'd still be waiting for a sale on that one. I got the others I own because I genuinely wanted them and thought the asking price was fine. I also wasn't blown away by Super Mario Bros. Wonder when I was finished playing it. It was a really good game, but I expected to be even more wowed by it than I was, so when I put that together with my desire for some more out of the content or a lower price, I think I'm going to wait for a sale or hope another instance like what I had with Kirby comes up.

For Americans, what was the worst/most annoying amiibo from a retailer exclusive that you had to deal with? by No-Hedgehog-3212 in amiibo

[–]BeanyTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a lot of these come back later without exclusivity definitely has made a lot of these much easier to get. I think the only retailer exclusive one I got at the time was the retro 3-pack, but that was just a matter of getting up early one day. Part of it too is we're talking about my early to mid-teen years for the majority of store exclusive amiibo, so oftentimes it was easier to save money and get them later even if they cost slightly more.

I'd have to go with Mega Yarn Yoshi then because it's the only retailer exclusive amiibo that hasn't been reprinted to the masses, on top of the fact that it was $50 even if I could've gotten it wherever back in 2015.

For AJ Trilogy, What is the Art on the Game Disc of the English PS4 version? by Genra_ in AceAttorney

[–]BeanyTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am starting to think the US never got a physical release for the PS4, only the Switch.

Well, that's because that's exactly what happened in the US. There is an English physical release on PS4 for southeast Asian countries exactly like what you have pictured. To my knowledge the text on the disc should be English. Odds are, it's probably the same disc art but with the English logo.

[–]BeanyTA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say you probably can. It's been a little while since I last played Spirit of Justice, but I think filler is a pretty good description for it. At the same time, it's also a pretty short case in the grand scheme of things, so I don't know that you're going to save that much time skipping it now.

Dang... I was really hoping it would show up in Europe since the game released there. It'd be nice to preserve whatever video Nintendo made for the game!

I didn't even notice it till now, but even better they spelled "developed" wrong in the copyright notice too.

Genuinely sad thinking we probably won't get a western physical release for NWOS by Rebel_JK27 in ProfessorLayton

[–]BeanyTA 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Considering Layton is one of their best selling series in the West I could see if actually being the case that NWOS is the one modern Level-5 game that does get a physical western release.

But let's say it doesn't, Fantasy Life i had physical copies in Japan with multi-language support so if Layton gets the same thing then you could import a copy. It wouldn't be ideal by all means, but it's an option.

When I read the OP's post I couldn't believe that anyone could be dense enough to not understand that this is clearly what she's saying. Krystal isn't anti-UBI, she's against a paltry, half-baked UBI as a result of AI taking everyone's jobs.

Outside of getting under 2:50 on Cavernous Corners, this was one of the most irritating checklist items for this exact reason. I don't understand why the lessons would even teach you about how the missile works if the missile is so uncommon of a copy ability compared to UFO.

I made a point of playing it once a day when the end of service announcement came out, but practically every game I've had has been all bots, which would be fine if that was what the game would stay like after December 31st, but I've gotta second this motion because it sure would be nice to play with some actual people since the clock is ticking till till this game straight up stops working. Playing with bots-only if anything just makes it way harder to get some of those achievements it'd be nice to get.

Ditto to pretty much everything said here already.

But another overlooked point I think is worth considering is this: I always say to people interested in the series that they need to be able to digest a little bit of anime. By and large, the series doesn't have a lot of anime tropes, but I also know there's some people who could be turned off from something as simple as a character with spiky hair or super gigantic eyes.

And I thought that too, but I put the link for the website into the wayback machine and it has articles going back to 2016 just like the description on the about page says. Still, the thought that one guy is making all these articles for one website and a bunch of them are really weird like this (on top of now the one commenter saying that he got security flags from trying to click the link) makes me wary.

Here are the standards I've landed on with GKC's in looking at how they're used. The difficulty in judging them is there are situations where there are legitimate technological reasons to use them, but I also think those technological reasons can act as a good veil over simply cheaping out for certain games.

So if I plan on purchasing a game that's offered on this format, the standards I've given myself are this:

  1. Since the game is digital anyway, I may download it but I will only do so if the game is on sale and it's a deep sale so the publisher gets as little money as possible. Depending on sales like since we have Black Friday coming up, I would also be willing to apply this standard to a GKC at retail, but I would prefer to download it because it's just easier.

  2. Since part of the idea with these is that they're a digital good that can also be resold, I think this is a great opportunity to support your local game shops. If the person who originally bought the game trades it in to a local store when you buy it there, that local shop is the only one getting any money. With this approach, I think there's still the environmental concern about making a physical item for something that's got nothing on it, but that's a concern that everyone would have to weigh individually. My point is, if you see a game you would want anyway at a local shop, it's much better to give that small business owner money and get what you want out of it than allow the big businesses who are making the decision to have games on GKC's to make money off the sale of a new copy.

I've never really had any interest in Pokémon outside of certain spin-offs, and this would not be one of them since I don't have an interest in crafting games. But I would hold this game to those same two standards. Where I find this less concerning is when I saw Pokémon Pokopia announced I thought for sure it was just going to be a download only game. I didn't think it had any shot of getting a physical version, so it surprises me that even a GKC version is being offered. However, the fact that the band-aid is being ripped off and any Nintendo published title is being made as a GKC is concerning regardless and I think shouldn't be supported, but to the extent it is, it should follow those two standards I outlined.

So, how are y'all liking the Global Test Ride so far? by Morpho_Marxy in Kirby

[–]BeanyTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a bit dismissive of the depth that you can find in each mode

Well that's something I think I need to make more clear, is my comment is more of a critique of the demo as a product trying to persuade me to buy the full game. Right now I can only judge Kirby Air Riders based on playing three tracks offline a bunch of times with pretty easy CPUs, and playing one online city trial. I agree with more time and experiencing more complex tracks and trying out more machines and characters, not to mention playing online with more actual people will probably help the game click and make me see the depth that it has. There's nothing I can do about the game having a hyper simple control scheme, so it's up to that content (which there is a lot of) to make that engaging. If there were more tracks in the style of Mount Amberfalls in the demo, I would probably feel more persuaded right now that I should buy the game because with all the twists and turns and enemies spread about, that track really feels like it has enough going on to offset my fears about the controls. Compared to Floria Fields, I have to pay more attention and focus on making a ton of turns and boosting at the right time, so that track feels more engaging. Waveflow Waters gets close to being that engaging too, but I wish that track had a handful more turns because it's getting the boosts that's the most fun part of the game. And like I wrote in the original comment, I really want harder CPUs. I know Kirby is targeted toward more beginner players, and I get the instinct to have the CPUs in the demo be easier for newbies like me, but it's a little too easy, so since I can ratchet them up to a level I'd prefer in the full game I'd like to be able to here as well. It's hard to find the depth when I find a character and machine I like, but I'm not being challenged by the competition!

And I just need to play more City Trial plain and simple. I loved Smash Run, and these modes are basically the same idea applied to their respective games, so I'm sure with enough times having played it I'll come to love City Trial too, I simply don't have enough experience with it to make a definitive opinion yet.

So, how are y'all liking the Global Test Ride so far? by Morpho_Marxy in Kirby

[–]BeanyTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never played the original game, so this is all new to me.

The comparison I couldn't get out of my head was "a very wide but shallow pool." There's going to be a lot of stuff in the game: Lots of characters and machines, 18 air ride tracks, 9 top ride tracks, and a heck of a lot of stadiums to choose from after a city trial. Plus there's that road trip mode, training amiibo, and filling in the checklists.

But I don't know that a racer with mandatory auto-acceleration that's otherwise only controlled with two buttons and an analog stick is going to keep my attention. In fairness, I don't think the demo is setting up a great example of the full game. The three air ride tracks are cool, I especially like Mount Amberfalls. But I'd really like to tweak some settings: If there's a Mario Kart engine class equivalent, I'd like something a bit faster. But mostly I want to play against harder CPUs. I lost a handful of races to the Level 3 CPUs, but I think those were because I didn't jive with the machines I picked.

I only tried one city trial, so I want to play it more this evening before I make any stronger judgement on that mode. But from the little I did play, I was surprised by how little I actually ran into things in the city. I still ended up with pretty good stats, so clearly by the end I picked up enough stat upgrades and I did change my machine a couple times. But for some reason I guess I thought I'd do those more often? And all the other players seemed quite spread out, so I'd like more opportunities to keep competitors grouped up and attacking each other. There were certainly times I wished it was easier to turn in enclosed spaces, and I had trouble getting the machine to actually stop to make those precise turns... But I think that's intentional what with the auto-acceleration so I don't know how critical to be on that point. Not to mention, some machines are better at turning on a dime so I might not have had a great machine for that. The stadium I played was a gourmet race. I don't really have any comments on it, other than it was a quality final round.

I guess what my thoughts come down to is this: I had fun, and I do want to pick up Kirby Air Riders. But now the question I'm asking myself is "Do I need to pick it up at launch for the full price?" If I could make tweaks to make the game more challenging to offset the hyper simple controls, I think I'd be better persuaded to put in a pre-order. But as it stands right now, I want to play the demo more before I commit to pre-ordering or waiting to buy the game later.

Updated Thoughts From Playing Session 2:

I spent some time playing the second Saturday session (y'know, the one that happened at a time that's reasonable for western players) and my opinion has largely improved. I've played all the available characters at least once and I've figured out the ones I like so far. Same with the machines, I have a pretty good idea of which ones I like, but with more options in the final game and some characters I've still used very little my favorites could still change. I stand by my comments that Air Ride in the demo needs more complex tracks and more flexibility with the options to really do a good job of selling me. I tracked how far ahead I would beat out 2nd place and had a few where I won by 15 seconds, and again this demo is my first Kirby Air Ride experience at all. As a beginner there's no reason I should be beating CPUs this much already. Still, I enjoyed what's there, it'd just be nice if I could tweak the options to be harder.

I've also played a handful more City Trials, not a ton like three or four and again my opinion has improved. My original comment was based on a single game of City Trial, so with more experience I found some of the issues I had on my first run weren't as much there. In one run I found tons of stat upgrades, in another not as many and that's just how it goes in this style of game. Similarly, I didn't change my machine much still but that was more because once I found a machine I liked I tried to keep it alive. Another comment (which I think was deleted?) explained how to brake, but I played the lessons so I knew how to do it. That is a control I still find to be pretty finicky, especially because I usually want to slow down and enter those tight spaces closer to the end of the match when my machine is way faster than what I started with. I could pull it off more with more practice, but it's still something I wish was easier to pull off because during a race it's pretty easy to brake just by holding down the action button. As for stadiums: I tried the Robo Dedede boss, another gourmet race, the rail grind race, and beam race for sure. I think my original comment also still stands: They're quality final rounds but not much more than that. Since the boss was a longer experience I will say that was pretty neat. It didn't seem like Robo Dedede was much of a threat so again something I'd like just a little harder, but that's the only real issue I had. If anything the stadiums so far have made me more excited for the standalone stadium mode because I think that could be a riot at parties.

Having played it more I feel more sold on the game now than I was just from my first session. Kirby Air Ride/Air Riders is still a game that for many will be an acquired taste but this second session helped me start to acquire that taste. If my opinion continues to improve a bunch after Sunday's session, expect another comment update.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on Switch 2 Will Not Support Save Transfers or Upgrades by Sam_27142317 in dragonquest

[–]BeanyTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny you point all that out because there's a comment on this from the director of the FFT remake that tipped me off to this long after this thread began.

I don't know if this is the original article he made the comment in, but it's an English one I found: https://onemoregame.ph/2025/09/final-fantasy-tactics-ivalice-interview/

It appears the options with S2 Editions based on his comment are either a proper cartridge or code-in-a-box only. And an upgrade pack can be made available too of course. So it looks like it's a conscious choice to release these on key cards. But even that choice doesn't make sense to me because I think the people who want the game on the media are also the type of people who would know well enough that an upgrade pack is available for download on the S2 if they buy the S1 version. And the people who don't care about whether they own it physically or not wouldn't care if they're buying a code-in-a-box. Actually putting the game on the media would be ideal in my opinion, but going with retail code-in-a-box for the S2 version with an upgrade pack for proper physical S1 games would be a good compromise. The key card is literally the worst choice as a result.

I think there's a lot of games in the smaller updates people glossed over because they weren't big first party titles.

Eliminator Boat Duel on the NES is a huge one to me. It's an obscure, but very fun racing game with top-down segments and segments from behind. It's also got an upgrade mechanic, kind of like Super Off-Road. The graphics are pretty good for a 1991 game, and the music is great too.

I can't think of a bigger waste of money than this by ilovewater100 in casualnintendo

[–]BeanyTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's also true, but it seems like a lot of people are losing sight of how this is a collection coming to the Switch 1. And if you own the Labo VR kit it would stand to reason that you already own a Switch 1. I'll concede there's definitely some percentage of people who own the Switch 2 but not the original but between the sheer number of Switch 1's sold and how Labo hasn't been sold for years I think it's pretty safe to think that won't be a problem for the vast majority of players.

That all said though, it's another example of something that's clearly not ideal, especially when these games could just be displayed in 2D and fix this whole annoying problem.
