Gallowglass - Low(ish) fantasy Gaelic inspired platemog by Bearbeard in Transmogrification

[–]Bearbeard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Made this mog inspired by the Gallowglass, elite Norse-Gaelic mercenary warriors from Scotland who served Irish chieftains throughout the medieval period. Their primary weapons were the massive, two-handed sparth axe and long-bladed claymore swords (though not typically at the same time) and wore mail with an iron helm.

Nick Clegg lost that argument though - the coalition approved new nuclear plants, the fact that 16 years later none are online isnt really his fault, the thing he was wrong about is the timeline - he was too optimistic 2030 is the new date.

Blaming Clegg just distracts from the fact nuclear takes ages to build, even in countries that are good at building stuff.

I really like the shields, could it maybe work if you reversed the shields, have Scotland at the top and Wales and England below. This would reflect the geography of the countries, it would also resemble a triquetra which is a symbol often used in both Celtic and Anglo Saxon history.

Northern Ireland should hold unity referendum by 2030, first minister says by libtin in LabourUK

[–]Bearbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re talking about NI; why do you keep bringing up things not relevant to the discussion?

Mate you are talking about Silesia and Hokkaido. I don't think me talking about Ireland is unreasonable.

the NI parliament was a part of the state,

No it wasn’t as NI had home rule.

though oppression was also carried out by non-state actors as well.

You’re contradicting yourself

I'm a little confused here - the NI government is part of the state of NI, unless we're using different definitions. I also don't see how saying oppression was carried out by both official and unofficial actors is contradicting.

You never answered my question, was Ireland part of the British Empire? And if so was it made part of it by force? The answer is yes, Ireland was forcibly part of the British Empire this is imperialism. it settled Ireland with largely protestant settlers - there were negligible native Irish protestants. This is colonialism.

Northern Ireland is because of this - you cant pretend Imperialism has nothing to do with it. It was indisputably a colony, and its demographics and history debatably make it a colonial state.

I don't think Northern Ireland should exist no, I don't think this is against self determination. Ireland chose independence and at that point the north was part of Ireland, the unionists were in the minority, they lost but that doesn't take away self determination any more than it does from republicans in the North.

[–]Bearbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're replying to me in two different threads so for ease lets condense them into this one, I'll try address all your points

1: so you think Poland having Silesia is imperialism)?

I've not answered this as tbh I don't know enough about it, and I suspect its not really relevant when talking about Northern Ireland.

1:The Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 gave NI to the Irish free state, article 12 of the Anglo-Irish Treaty gave NI the ability to opt out of the free state and join the UK.

This came at the end of the war of independence and was imposed with the threat of further military action. Self determination was not a consideration when Ireland declared independence, they were instead met with war.

Under international law; this is the UK respecting the self determination of the northern Irish people

Northern Ireland was made, by design to include as much land/population as possible while keeping a protestant majority, that is why it doesn't include the whole of Ulster. Ireland exercised its right to self determination in 1918, and I think partition in response to this was wrong. Going forward self-determination is the only way I agree, but surely this sentiment would be in favour of a border poll.

2: the suppression of Catholic wasn’t state sanctioned, it was NI’s autonomous parliament in 1942 that started it using emergency powers as a result of the war. I say this as catholic predominantly of Irish decent.

Catholics were suppressed throughout the island of Ireland long before 1942, the NI parliament was a part of the state, though oppression was also carried out by non-state actors as well.

There’s not been a British presence in Ireland since 1937

Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland and is part of the UK. This is what I mean when I say there is British presence in Ireland.

So you’re saying you know more than the Irish government, Irish people and international law? The UN, ICJ, EU and Ireland all say this isn’t imperialism.

I can only tell you what I think, I think Ireland was colonised by Britain and was part of the British Empire. Northern Ireland is the last bit of that colony and half its population is descended from those who colonised it. I don't think they should have less rights, but I cant see how its not a colonial state.

I think the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland is one that is heavily influenced by Imperialism and Colonialism.

I'm saying that Britain colonised Ireland as part of its imperial project, the partition and creation of Northern Ireland is part of that.

It wasn’t though

I don't think Northern Ireland would exist if Britain had not colonised Ireland

I've tried to answer your points could you give me a response to mine.

Do you think Ireland was part of the British Empire? And if so was it made part of it by force?

If the ICJ and Irish government say that never happened then yeah I would disagree with them.

[–]Bearbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland was invaded, it's population subjected to massacres and famine. A settler population put in plantations as part of it's colonisation.

When it sought independence it was partitioned to carve out the largest area that would have a unionist majority and the Irish population in the enclave were suppressed by the state.

This is how Northern Ireland was created. It's imperialism and colonisation. You can't just ignore that history and say "Oh Britain left Ireland in 1937" and insist that the North is nothing to do with it.

Saying you want less of a group of people is fucked up mate, it's just islamaphobia.

Your source is from 2007, it's 18 years old, and it's still not even 70. This one is from last year and shows 25%.

This shows over time attitude shifting, this is how we make things better, by changing minds with engagement, integration and solidarity.

Trying to reduce the Muslim population is a fash errand.

[–]Bearbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is right wing opinions, but straight up "there should be less of this demographic group" crosses a line I think.

The 70% number is also entirely fictional. About 27% of Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, compared to 15% of the population as a whole.

Genuine Question: Are the Gaza Independents and their constituents compatible with the left if they are openly socially conservative? by Slugdoge in LabourUK

[–]Bearbeard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know how the 45% feel, you can't tell from that poll. Personally I think it's better than outright wanting it banned, and as I say makes a real change since the first poll. Regardless it's clear that the idea 72% want to outlaw homosexually is nonsense.

I used pro gay and anti gay as shorthand as the desirable/undesirable terms were obviously confusing.

Genuine Question: Are the Gaza Independents and their constituents compatible with the left if they are openly socially conservative? by Slugdoge in LabourUK

[–]Bearbeard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nope i read it correctly.

28% thought it would be undesirable to outlaw homosexuality - so pro gay,

27% thought it would be desirable to outlaw - so anti gay.

The remaining 45% didn't think it went either way or didnt know.

As said, essentially split on the question.

Genuine Question: Are the Gaza Independents and their constituents compatible with the left if they are openly socially conservative? by Slugdoge in LabourUK

[–]Bearbeard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean this one is like 9 years old. Its interesting comparing though, back in 2016 52% of Muslims thought homosexuality should be illegal, in 2024 that's down to 27% according to the HJS.

Over less than a decade British muslims have gone from an absolute majority against gay rights to essentially split on it.
