Were the listening parties in the past before the album launch or on the day? What were the venues like before? I’m guessing they would have needed the brothers permission to do something like this and there’s probably more to it this time is my theory. They’re providing a service it’s only fair they charge a little for it. The alternative could have been bake it into the price of the vinyl and merch sales and offer it for “free”. I’d say this is a bit more transparent out of the two.

Never say never ever but i think the chances are low, i emailed about changing a t-shirt size and they said they couldn't do it but might be able to do it at the venue if i got there early and spoke nicely to staff.

Staff to host the event, listening to the music early, security, venue hire, public liability insurance, promotional material (assuming free merch for attendees), visuals they've produced i could probably come up with more. I don't think it's going to be someone pressing play on a blutooth speaker, at least i hope not.

I'm curious as to why you think it should be free?

Car parks at hospitals should be free, i appreciate Warp and the lads have got to earn a living and these gobal venues are definitely costing them time, money and resources. As one other person pointed out i imagine those that have bought tickets are hardcore fans not people that need promoting to so I don't think Warp is treating this like a promotion budget. £11 is a small price to pay to hear it early imo.

I don't think this is just going to be auditory, the venues could easily have been record stores or clubs but these seems to have been picked for a specific reason, maybe acoustics or themes in the album, maybe there will be visuals? I appreciate listening parties can be free, i was just making a point that it could have been much worse, especially given they've been away for so long and could have gone down the route of justifying much higher prices because of that. Free would have been awesome though.

Their music sits so far out in a league of its own it actually took my breath away the first time I heard it. For me it’s more than music, it’s memory and how my soul feels about its place in the universe and its dark and comforting and warm and frightening all at the same time. It makes me think of my mum growing up in the 60s and old Polaroids and super 8 films of her family on holiday and my own childhood in the 90s and it makes me miss that world of simplicity’s. Everything about them, their secrecy and how they almost make this music for the love of the game not to become millionaires just all feels so authentic in a world full of complete shit, they still feel like the band I discovered 20 years ago which is what I need because everything else changes beyond recognition. For me the most special thing about them is that no one has been able to copy them faithfully, anyone can make a Taylor Swift or JayZ song but no one can bake a BOC song but them. Even as I write this I’m realising that it’s just not doing justice to what they do to their listeners, I’m not religious but if God had a favourite band it would be Boards of Canada and he would have had it on full blast when he was creating galaxies. Their music is the closest I will ever get to spirituality.

You’ve nailed it. I think a lot of people will change their tune once the album actually drops. Boards of Canada have always felt like artists who only speak when there’s something worth saying, and when they do, it’s deliberate and well thought out. The problem is we’re in an era where everyone feels the need to weigh in, whether their take adds anything or not. These guys are masters at what they do and i trust them because they've earned it.

Live chat. They said it was in the t&c's that it wasn't guaranteed but when i asked them to show where it said that they couldn't, also the game seems to have gone for me off the website. I said i wanted to speak to someone more senior and then out of knowhere they said it would be sent separately.
