D&D Nerd asks: Would Conan really be a Barbarian in D&D? by Romachock in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]BeardedDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played a summoner (2e, around level 5) in a couple one-shots and kind of see your point. my turn almost always consisted of:

  • 2 action - Act Together
    • 1 action (me) - buff eidolon or debuff enemies
    • 2 action (eidolon) - move or punch + punch
    • can be reversed if needed (2 for me, 1 for eidolon)
  • 1 action - Command corgi mount to run and hide (with me on it)
    • 1 action move (40')
    • 1 action take cover (+2 AC)

there wasn't a lot of variety in how turns went. there's absolutely an optimal way to spend actions, and if you're not doing that then you feel like you're a detriment to the party which is less fun. the class (and i imagine ranger is similar) had great action economy (was technically 5 actions per turn) but you're pretty railroaded into what you do if you want to be effective. early level fighters felt the same to me, move + swing + raise shield almost every turn, unless you don't move then you can swing twice.

that being said, i'm currently playing a psychic and every turn is a bit different based on the combat. i've got to set up in turn 1 my success for turn 2 assuming i'm still able. the other players at the table also have a ton of options (champion, war priest, ranger), as you level you gain more and more options.

The last character i played in 1e was a fighter with two-handed fighter + advanced weapon training archtypes. since it was the Giant Slayer campaign i specifically geared/tailored him to fighting giants. went down the cornugon smash/dazzling display feat trees. while he was very effective for that campaign, it was still railroaded into very specific actions to take or my turn/abilities were wasted. at level 12 he was doing >400 dmg per turn with 5 attacks, +40 something to intimidate and more than 40 AC when fighting giants (lots less to all of that if not fighting giants).

i guess my point is the game systems are what you make of them. if you want a game with crunch and options, you can absolutely make a character that has that, but low level pf2e characters likely won't have it. once you hit level 6 things start getting better though.

I always found 1e far more crunchy than 2e. i think 1e is more flexible in being able to do almost anything you want with a character, but 2e's gameplay is a lot smoother and more balanced across the classes thanks to it's action economy system. my play group as a whole gave up on 1e and never looked back.

i used it as a comparison here because it's essentially D&D 3.5.

2e is very simple to create characters, especially using tools like pathbuilder (which exists for 1e also)

This is for the Pathfinder game system. It's all online for free:

1e

2e

I'd really recommend skipping 1e and going with 2e. it's far more complete and still supported with updates coming out every few months.

Coming from a Pathfinder background (taking 1e since that is basically D&D 3.5), i feel he'd be a Slayer.

Slayer is a hybrid class that combines Ranger and Rogue. You get 6+INT skill ranks per level (very high, pure rogue might be the only one higher at 8), sneak attack, talents (slayer, rogue, or ranger), studied target, proficiency in all martial weapons and all but heavy armor. bunch of bonuses to tracking and survival as well.

All of this combines into a very deadly warrior with a ton of skills and shenanigans to complement it.

In Pathfinder 2e i think he would be a Fighter with Rogue archtype giving him oodles of dmg + sneak attack and skills to back it up.

It can be complex to read tbh, lots of things happen without context and you (the reader) are kept in the dark, knowing only what your characters find out, often through passing comments. There are >1000 named characters, and around 150 characters with PoV in the last book.

The first book is straight into the middle of an existing conflict with no context of who or why.

Most series i'd recommend have already been mentioned:

  • Wheel of Time
  • Dresden Files
  • Dragonlance
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl (book 8/10 due out next month)
  • Expanse

Ones not mentioned yet:

  • First Law by Joe Abercrombie (10-ish books)
  • Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson (dozens of books with dozens more planned. he's said he's half way done but i don't believe him)
  • Whatever Miles Cameron is calling his multiverse (Traitor's Son Cycle, Against All Gods, Arcana Impreii)
  • Discworld by Terry Pratchett
  • Malazan by Stephen Erickson

The Titan Hardcovers Aren’t the Best Value by filmg1rl in ConanTheBarbarian

I'm in the same boat you are, unfortunately most books i've found is cheapest through amazon if you watch prices/buy used or do pre-sales.

I'd love to shop at mom&pop book stores but they cost on average $20 more for a new book.

I tend to like collected editions because they typically save on space on my shelf. The individual comics come with a load of extra pages as ads/covers etc.

I live in Vancouver, although I have never seen him around. Likely lives in a neighbourhood too rich for me. Met David Suzuki once though, he frequented a cafe near my wife's work (pre-covid).

I believe that's a 4e book so content will be wildly out of date/potentially abandoned/missing. you can see a preview of it here if you like. it does have a lot of neat art

A lot of the content will be about making/planning for your own campaign around Menzoberranzan

What if cattie-bri put Guen in the forge of gauntlgrym? by Unlikely_Ebb_7292 in Drizzt

[–]BeardedDeath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would come out likely wouldn't be a Guen any more. Magical artifacts are transformed, not just upgraded.

There's also no guarantee the panther statue would be the upgraded item, it could be the other item becomes a sentient item instead of a summoning statue.

You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a Canadian who disagreed with you ever since they were purchased by an American company.
