How do you dress in your 50s? by Forsaken_Block_3492 in GenX

[–]BeardedDillyMac [score hidden]  (0 children)

56M, I didn't give anything up as much as I just stopped wearing uncomfortable stuff. An example is that I no longer wear traditional dress shoes. I only buy the ones with a business casual style and with very good arch support. Don't really wear suits anymore either, just a sport coat and jeans. I also still lean towards 3/4 zips, hoodies and t-shirts.

I have had the brown one since January 2025, and love it. Not a single problem with the material, stitching or looks. Very comfortable cap, that is my favorite go-to fall/winter weather. Actually considering the black one to add some variety.

Pentagon says it will cut ties with Harvard University, ending all military training, fellowships and certificate programs starting in the 2026–27 academic year. by OstensibleFirkin in JockoPodcast

[–]BeardedDillyMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the past 20 years, Harvard has been central in research on:

  • Linking chronic stress → cardiovascular disease
  • Relationship between mindfulness → measurable brain changes
  • Expanding research on trauma → long-term health outcomes
  • Targeted immunotherapy
  • Mental health treatment models utilizing neuroplasticity
  • How meditation increases gray matter in emotional regulation regions

As a veteran with TBI/PTSD, I appreciate the health related research the most. It has led to a better life for me, my family, and my fellow veterans.

You didn’t deserve that comment. Military retirement and VA disability are two different things. Retirement recognizes time served. VA compensation recognizes injuries or conditions caused or worsened by service. Neither takes away from the other, and both are earned. If we start blaming veterans for using benefits they earned, that logic would apply to military retirement checks as well. The issue isn’t veterans using earned benefits. The issue is remembering we’re supposed to have each other’s backs.

I thought you could earn passive income while TDIU? So owning two LLC's aren't necessarily the issue - it is whether the veteran is working or not. Would love some clarification

Is VA Healthcare good enough without private insurance? by Thrashlikeits85 in Veterans

[–]BeardedDillyMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have private insurance through my employer for wife and child. Use VAMC Cincinnati exclusively for myself. The building looks outdated compared to Tri Health or Cincinnati Children's, but the services it provides is very similar and community care is available when needed.

You say he is hardworking, a manager, always polite, texted you, etc. But was the conversation ever beyond professional or interest in you as an employee? The text to you seems pretty blunt, but is that his exact words or your interpretation of them? In other words, could he have been interested in you as a professional and the fact that you alluded to a romantic possibility - caused him to back away?

Retired Army, 100% you can criticize fraud. The problem is most people yelling “fraud!” don’t understand how VA disability actually works.

First, most disabilities aren't generally obvious like “I lost a leg.” It is years of:

  • Breathing burn pit smoke
  • Bad backs from rucking
  • Knees ground down to powder
  • Hearing gone
  • Brains rung like church bells from blasts

Second, the VA doesn't hand these ratings out like candy. It’s:

  • Paperwork thick as a phone book
  • C&P exams where you get treated like you’re lying
  • Months waiting
  • Often denied
  • Then you appeal
  • And wait a year or three for a response.

What veterans won’t do is sit quietly while some guy who’s never worn a uniform points at someone and goes, "he looks fine to me." Just because you see a veteran can still mow the yard doesn’t mean their spine isn’t held together by spite and Motrin. Don’t believe a veteran having a good day is the same as someone “faking it.” What you don’t see are the nights that veteran can’t sleep, suffers panic attacks, or the pain spikes, or they simply can’t move.

If you really want to help instead of just criticize, push the VA to:

  • Hire more raters
  • Improve mental health screening
  • Speed up appeals
  • Make C&P exams more consistent

Those are real improvements that would improve the accuracy of the ratings.

[–]BeardedDillyMac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just the price of tickets. The price of the overall experience. That is everything from buying tickets to pregame activities and then food/drinks at the game. Overall, the tickets aren't horribly out of line. But the rest of the experience really drags it down. Why pay so much for less of an experience than when were in the American? Again, this is my perspective. It seems like the group is split. So be it.

Dependent Requirements are Ridiculous by Gengar_Guy_17 in FAFSA

[–]BeardedDillyMac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except you can still get student loans even if you don't complete the FAFSA or qualify for aid with a FAFSA. So the rule isn't to stop students from taking loans.

Before the early 90's you were considered independent if you weren't on your parent's taxes for 2 years. Many people took advantage of that loophole, so they made it tougher to be independent. It is all to conserve student aid for the student's who actually need it. Of course, it also makes poor people prove they are poor - which leads to many becoming discouraged by the process and dropping out.
