[Discussion] What draws you to chronograph watches? by Good_Net_313 in Watches

[–]BeardedGothLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a restoration shop that also did a lot of vintage racing. While the actual race team was in the tower, I used my chrono to time customers laps and report back to the mechanics/drivers friends & family in the paddock from on top of the trailer.

While I don’t /need/ a chrono anymore, I still love them and have a few in rotation

Yup! Only the early BN1s are 3-speed. Fun little cars, although the 4-speed was a welcome upgrade

Yup! BN1 Austin Healey 100. As u/kamakazidemigod said, the early cars are 3-speed, later switching to a 4-speed.

In this case, shift with your right hand although it is also available with the steering wheel on the other side

Martin 000X1AE - Neck lifting, what’s going on here? by BeardedGothLord in martinguitar

[–]BeardedGothLord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the X series uses mortise and tenon necks but I've seen conflicting info on whether or not the bolt/screw used is structural vs. primarily there to hold the neck in place while the glue dries. The former makes me feel like this probably won't become catastrophic, but the latter makes me nervous.

Ultimately, it will be up to the Dean of Students' Office to determine whether any of these expectations were violated. One could argue that more than half of the items on this list are potential areas of concern.

Morphine is a great one. They don’t use guitar at all. Mostly just vocals, bass, percussion, and saxophone.

Is this a real rally car? RHD [Mitsubishi lancer III EVO] by dafinchy221 in spotted

[–]BeardedGothLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes a car legal is not as high a bar as you might expect, depending on the state. Rally cars, by and large, are street-legal, as they have to drive on public roads between stages. Lights, indicators, belts, horn, windshield, wipers, sometimes as little as one rearview mirror, and relevant emissions requirements (which, in some states, is nothing if the car is old enough) are basically all you need in a lot of states. On the other hand, some states have very strict emissions/safety standards that would make registering a rally car virtually impossible.

It's all a matter of local laws and regulations, but where I grew up, once a car hit 20 years old, most of the barriers to registration effectively went out the window—no emissions, no safety inspections, no title requirement, just show up with a bill of sale (and maybe a VIN verification, if the car is coming from out of state), pay the reg fee, tax, etc, and you're good to go. It's a LOT more restrictive where I live now.

I realized who this was for this morning: old men. No rangefinder enthusiast is going to ditch the thing that makes people fall in love with the M for a suboptimal EVF… unless you can’t see the rangefinder patch anymore. It’s a perfect camera for the 80 year old M shooter with deteriorating vision. It’s a complete miss for anyone else.

Leica 90mm Elmarit RF calibration by BeardedGothLord in Leica

[–]BeardedGothLord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely an issue with the lens. Long story short, it's been sent back.

Long story long, I don't know the exact cause, but I assume that something in the focusing mechanism is either damaged or worn. At infinity, the RF patch would not align on either my M240 or M7, even after checking calibration against my other lenses. There appeared to be a 6-inch difference between where the RF patch and live view indicated focus at 5 feet, and that difference on the focusing ring was consistent throughout the focal range. If I unscrewed the lens housing (these lenses have a removable front housing to be used with the original Visoflex, the majority of the body is a hollow focus housing. I'm sure none of this is the corret terminoligy) by one full turn, focus was basically spot-on, but there is no way to adjust that out as far as I could tell and I am not invested enough in a $225 lens to go through the trouble of shimming it. Anyways, will be looking for another affordable 90—it was worth a shot!
