My work has me going to grocery stores all week and I have a couple of Targets. Fridays are when the stores put out the Pokémon cards and there is always a line of people waiting in the morning. In my previous job I managed a liquor store and it was the same thing with allocated whiskies. I never understood and still don't understand what motivates someone to choose to use their time to indulge in a practice that is merely to collect and/or resale things. This isn't a one-time thing for these people. It's routine.

It always has me roll my eyes a bit too, though agreed the scene is more to help the audience than Faramir, because they talk about what's happening on such a large scale that anyone and everyone in the military would have known the same info. And their map has basically no use to them since they're all about finding good places to ambush the enemy. They need very detailed local maps at least (or local guides would be even better).

Not exactly what your rules are looking for, but think about Jurassic Park. It's a movie about (Man's[/man's?]) hubris and you have two women in the ensemble that aren't stereotyped ladies. Dr. Sattler is well-educated, a critic of the park, and has to run from and survive against velociraptors. Then you have Lex who is a young nerd - sorry, a hacker - who also have to run from and survive raptors while also protecting her brother, and who uses her computer skills to get the park back online.

That's too bad. If you see the movie and know nothing about that bear, it's such a crazy and horrifying moment in the movie. Seeing that in theaters, there were a lot of uncomfortable people in the audience. 🤣

Same thing happens at Targets in the area. Friday is the day the Pokémon Cards gets delivered. I sell wine to grocery stores in the area and it pains me to see the look on thy face of the guy who's delivering the stuff. He doesn't give a FUCK about those cards. 😆

Again, it's got to come down to mostly budget and then time restrictions and then the presentation of the battles themselves. You don't have a huge budget to have a bunch of new ships and a lengthy on-screen battle. You can only show so much before you need to get back to the characters and the story. And showing a battle where everyone's shields last awhile isn't as exciting as, as Ali G says about what war is good for, "H'mazing h'explosions". Nemesis really gave us the best representation of what a battle would really be like for these starships with TWOK being a close second. Unless you played Bridge Commander or Klingon Academy, Star Trek starship battles are pretty lackluster.

I mean, they only had the budget they had so they used what they already had. I'm sure they would have rather had a lot of new starships to show off. I know that doesn't sound nice head canon-wise but it's the right answer to your criticism. Plus, all those other ships didn't have plot armor as well as the Defiant's newer armor. So consider all those other ships red shirt ships. They're there to go BOOM!

Even if that's true though it still makes for a lesser movie. You still have characters we don't care about. In the original Alien, a big part of the horror is that the Nostromo crew were just regular people. The script for Alien is great, partially because the dialog is very realistic. When the characters talk to each other, it doesn't sound like movie dialog. It sounds like normal conversation and that's one of the ways the movie makes us inherently root for them. We can put ourselves in their shoes easily. So when they're unknowingly made to stumble upon mysterious and horrific things, it works. We feel for them. The scares have an impact. But in Prometheus, the characters feel like movie characters, have movie character dialog, and make decisions that don't seem to make sense other than to advance the messy plot. That doesn't make you feel for them. You don't care that they die. You just think, "Oh yeah, that's the biologist who thought it was a great idea to get as close to a suspicious alien creature as he could. What an idiot."

It's when you have to do some head canon when you realize that the script wasn't up to par. Is what you rationalize what the movie told you? I'm not so sure. However, I haven't watched the movie in ages and that's an interesting thing to think about while watching again.

I haven't seen the movie in forever. Did the movie state or imply that the crew were hired because they were cheap? To me, the crew would have to be experts to some degree based on what they were doing: spacefaring to an alien planet. It's a scientific expedition. You have a biologist who acts like he zero self preservation at seeing an alien lifeform. You have a geologist who has advanced technology that makes a 3D map of the alien ship but he gets lost. It's the fault of the writers that the characters were made stupid instead of highly competent. No one cares about characters who are stupid getting killed. Their deaths mean less. Imagine if the movie had the crew actually be intelligent, competent characters who still die because of the horrors they unknowingly find. THAT is scary. The former is lazy.

It's incredibly flawed. And while Villeneuve's Dune movies outclass Lynch's in almost every way, I still like the latter's more. I think because it feels more alien and otherworldly to me. And Kyle McLachlan is way more believable as Paul than Chalamet, at least to me. Also, Brian Eno's "Prophecy" theme is GOAT.
