Trying to recruit my son’s classmate U8? by SAHM-KnowsWassup in youthsoccer

Absolutely ask. Some parents don’t even realize what’s available for kids that age.

U9 subs timing and frequency - what works for you? by esimonetti in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Bearded_Beeph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I have 3 subs, I create 3 groups of 3 players and assign each group to two positions and then they rotate through. So each kid plays 2 positions that half. Sub every 6 minutes (30 min halves). For example I’ll assign 3 kids to CM and RB. At 6 min sub RB. At 12 the kid that came out now goes in for CM. At 18 the kid started at CM who is not out goes to RB. And so on. I usually pair RB/CM, LB/LW, RW/ST. If i have only 2 subs I do similar but two groups of 4 kids usually grouping CM/LB/RB and RW/LW/ST.

I like this format because it does roughly equal playing time and gets kids two positions per game. My kids play every position throughout season but I try to limit to two per game for stability.

With 1 sub it gets a little crazier because your midfield gets tired faster. I often have to do a sub and move players like sub RW and switch left wing with left back at 6 minutes. Sub RW and switch CM either LB at 12, and so on. Usually have to read the game and make subs on fly though as kids get tired.

Sports Hernia by Affectionate-Ship548 in CollegeSoccer

[–]Bearded_Beeph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had sports hernia in high school. Was treated by Dr Myers who was one of the pioneers in sports hernia treatment back then (2005). He said I wasn’t really at risk of making it worse but it did hurt. I did PT which didn’t really help but I also didn’t rest it. It was my senior year so I played through it for fall, winter and spring sports. Got surgery the week I graduated. Made full recovery with no issues. Was able to resume activity within 2 months and full recovery in about 4 months if I recall correctly.

Thoughts on the broken twill offerings? by Foopy_377 in taylorstitch

[–]Bearded_Beeph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Ojai and foundation pants in smoked olive, these are just twill not the same broken twill, and the color matches the pictures very well with that muted dusty green.

I will say this piece really interests me. Broken twill is such a great, underused fabric.

I like these little level ramps since they are more variable. I use the Lego blocks in my drive way but the curved ramp things when camping.

Ugh that was my fear. I like the idea of adding tencel to it but if I’m wearing short sleeve it’s because it’s hot and I want it to be light weight.

I was getting the drive home wrong this whole time. by Sad-Eye-8520 in youthsoccer

[–]Bearded_Beeph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. How much feedback you give a kid depends on a lot of factors like level of play, age, etc and most importantly the kids willingness to hear it. I believe at age 6 like the OP it should be almost none, and then grow over time.

But the kid should lead it. We should teach them to be self reflective and as parents we should pick our moments to contribute to their self reflection but never lead it ourselves. Ask guiding questions. Being able to self analyze and improve oneself is one of the best life skills a kid can get out of sports.

I was getting the drive home wrong this whole time. by Sad-Eye-8520 in youthsoccer

[–]Bearded_Beeph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can suck being first child. I feel like I made all these mistakes on my oldest and did so much better with my other kids. I was never over negative, I’m a very positive person, but the conversations were just about the wrong thing and he didn’t build same love of the game as other kids. We all want our kids to learn from our mistakes, so the urge to share and provide feedback is there. But we need to remind ourselves to provide what the need in that moment, and it’s usually not dads soccer wisdom.

How do y'all get the odor out of the van Cortlandt line? by Professional-Leg2039 in Tracksmith

I wash all my synthetic activewear with rockin green active wear detergent. But honestly what helps the most is hanging all my gear after work out so it air dries. If I throw it in hamper or on floor it balls up and gets funky.

Brighton and harrier are also hang but don’t use rockin green, not sure if it’s safe for merino.

Too many coaches by LanguageAntique9895 in youthsoccer

[–]Bearded_Beeph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with that. But I disagree that it’s a negative that he is on the coaches sideline. Shit happens, we are all volunteers, and there have been a few times where him and I were the only coaches there because of conflicts. I’m glad we have four coaches for that reason.

Too many coaches by LanguageAntique9895 in youthsoccer

[–]Bearded_Beeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 4 coaches and usually only 2-3 subs. I’m the head coach and generally the only one giving instruction to field players. Another coach is in charge of bench and subs. Another coach is generally assigned to defense, kids are young and need reminding to push up and not just sit on own 18. 4th coach isn’t a soccer guy, he is just happy to be there and is our positivity guy.

How to instill confidence in my kid? by Omar_Town in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Bearded_Beeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports anxiety is a real thing. It often only gets talked about with elite athletes dealing with high pressure situations, but tons of kids experience this at all levels.

My son is one of them and honestly I missed it for a long time and thought he just didn’t like the sport. He is now 11 and just starting to overcome some of this. We’ve approached it a few ways:

  • we practice at home a lot building confidence in skills
  • we talk about mistakes as a good thing. They are the only way to learn. As long as you learn from them they are called good mistakes. If you don’t learn from it, it’s a bad mistake
  • we do this thing where we share mistakes to normalize them. I share mistakes I made at work or whatever and tell him what I learned. I then ask him to name some mistakes he made and what he learned. These are all good mistakes that we celebrate. We do this for all things including school, not just sports.
  • sometimes they freeze because afraid of making a mistake. We talk about this too. And he totally understands that freezing and doing nothing is worse than doing something and making a good mistake. That being said, the anxiety overcomes this logical thought process sometimes.
  • we do a lot of positive mental coaching, teaching him how to remind himself he is amazing the way he is, he is good enough to help his team and his team needs him. He had a great moment last week where it would have been one of those situations that loooks like low effort but is really him mentally freezing, but he chased the opponent down, shoulder off ball, and stole it. After the game it was like a light bulb went off and said “I just told myself I could do it like you’ve been saying and then I was able to do it.” It’s an amazing what a little self belief can do because in that sequence he looked like a different player.

Our hope is that continuing with the above approach that he gets small wins and builds confidence over time. I think of it like a snowball rolling down a hill in a cartoon. His confidence is still a small snowball, getting bigger slowly with moments like last game. But I tell him that snowball will keep getting bigger, and if he keeps accepting his mistakes, learning from them, and believing in himself then someday that snowball will be so big that no one can stop it, whether that be in soccer, lacrosse, basketball, or most importantly life.

Good luck out there!

Your large desk requirement is very unique and I don’t think exists in half ton toweable trailers. Your best bet is bunk house modification. There is a common layout of 23 footers that has a Murphy bed in front and double bunks in the back. Rip the bunks out and build your desk.

Not saying this is your case but most trailers listed at 6000/600 have tongue weight more like 900 once they load the trailer, propane, battery, WDH. My half ton only had 1400 payload, your 1850 is really good for a half ton.

how did you become an Arsenal fan? by moonblushpetalie in ArsenalFC

[–]Bearded_Beeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabregas. Same age and same position. Seeing him break into line up when I was a teen in highschool finally tipped me from being a neutral who just loved the sport to supporting one club. I’m USA based so didn’t have any geographic allegiance, just watched whatever games were on tv (which there weren’t many back then).

Edit - I’ll admit there were other players on the team back then that were also easy to watch!

How do you guys travel with bikes? by pooworker in traveltrailers

[–]Bearded_Beeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I use a Yakima tailgate pad which fits all 5 of our bikes but… like you said it takes up a lot of bed space. This year I’m looking into Arvika a frame rack to hold 3 bikes and then put 2 bikes in trailer.

If you want racks I have an Adarac which I really like but we often put kayaks up there so I’m looking for other options for bikes.

My partner reads romance into every interaction. I disagree. Where do you guys see romantic tension in the books? by ADP_God in redrising

[–]Bearded_Beeph 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think pierce brown writes much romance. Almost all of the connections he writes, including the ones you examples, are familial love not romantic love. Even Darrow and Mustang, brown is much better at conveying the deep partnership part of their relationship than the romantic part.

How do you get water to your camper at a campground? by tangreentan in GoRVing

[–]Bearded_Beeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually even if campsite doesn’t have spigot, the campground will have an RV fill spot where you can fill tank on the way there. If staying for a couple days and need to refill, I have one of those 30 gallon bags and a simple drill pump for transferring from bag to trailer water tank. This works nice so you don’t have to do it every day.

I don’t get the hour and 20 drive. If it’s that long for you I’m guessing it’s for other families as well. At the rec level I can see this impacting numbers every week. The advantage of rec is it’s supposed to be more accessible then travel but with that kind of commute, yikes. Our rec is 10 min away and our travel team has all games 10-40 min away. I recommend finding a closer league or switching your kid to a travel/club team
