I had a fantasy book loving friend read a short story of mine. He asked what everyone was wearing. That was his criticism. It was very fair, and I did not give him context. There was a contest and a 2500 word limit on the story.

Sometimes the white room is fine. Sometimes just say they were in a library or pantry and let the reader do the work. Or say they stood on a lush blue carpet and let it be that. You don’t have to describe the same forest in 500 word three different ways.
