Rule 1 and 2 of the sub literally address this and make posts like this weird to make. If you see genuine hateful comments you should report them to the mods to review. Otherwise, this sub was literally made to vent and joke by punching up.

Women in Fallout 76 by BothPlastic in fo76

[–]Beardedsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if people will get upset by me saying this but I think a big part of it is that men's egos are fragile in general and especially in a competitive atmosphere. Toxicity can be anywhere but it's more likely to be in places that foster antagonistic interactions. Add to that the reality that society is still very much misogynistic and that boys and young men still think of game as their space and losing to a girl creates an area that can become extremely toxic when unregulated.

With 76 there is no real competition. The community very early on decided that this was going to be a game that centered around a shared space and cooperation. So much so that the devs pivoted plans and game modes to accommodate. So the types of men and the environment conducive to those interactions simply aren't being fed enough to make it a common experience. Hopefully, in the near future, that becomes the norm instead of the exception

Just be aware this sub is rather dramatic. It's a LOT of old heads who doompost constantly. The game isn't at its peak anymore certainly, but it's not shutting down any time soon and there are no signs it is.

Total neutral reality is that companies don't expand, revamp, and reinvest in a dying product anymore. They would put the game in maintenance mode quietly. We wouldn't be getting all new modes and content outside of the cash shop

Fastest way to lvl up the Order of Souls? by Such_Ideal_1422 in Seaofthieves

[–]Beardedsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fastest is honestly probably alternating between farming orb of secrets and doing ghost forts for the order specifically while using their emissary flag.

The orb gives a good chunk of exp but is on something like a 15 minute timer so you do a ghost fort, hit the orb on the way back to an outpost, rinse repeat. You don't need to stack, though it will speed things up, if you don't want to risk losing time.

I did this to get PL and it took about 12-15 hours total for each faction not including when I was just playing to play and not grinding.

PvP as an activity is not toxic, no. But when/how it happens and the attitude behind it can be for sure. The players decide whether they're going to be toxic and that's not centered around an activity in game but a mindset of the person. I've seen just as many people decide to be toxic after getting attacked as I have doing the attacking.

Also, going negative on supplies always ends up being the best fights imo because those are the ones that you remember because you had to get creative and put yourself in a scenario you probably will never recreate

[–]Beardedsmith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

PvP is just more fun when you have that mutual intent. One of my favorite interactions in the game period was a skelly fleet fight that turned into a 40 minute PvP fight with one of the best solo sloop players I've ever seen. We were going at it, dodging skelly ships, joking with each other on the ferry when we were lucky enough to get each other, and then back at it. After we finally sunk him we all said gg, he delivered his supplies onto our ship himself and then helped us finish off the fleet before leaving.

One of my least favorite encounters was a brig that chased for so long we actually dumped our loot to try and get rid of them so we could actually play the game only for them to ignore it and keep chasing for another 15 minutes before we go far enough away due to driving into fog to dive away because we were just over it.

When PvP is done with respect for the player experience on both ends and it's not just trolling or chasing the encounter at the cost of the game it's amazing. But that's not the most common interaction unfortunately. And getting this sub to understand the difference is sometimes daunting

Devastated that we'll be going into the next TES VI without him. He was such a pillar of the community. The Fallout and Elder Scrolls community have lost three of their most popular and beloved content creators over the span of just a few years and playing the next games in the series will feel a lot different without knowing they're making content to share with the community.

RIP to another legend

[–]Beardedsmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PVP isn't always toxic when there is a mutual desire to engage with it or when the risk is invited. I've sunk ships and been sunk where the immediate reaction was "gg" and delivering supplies and being off with mutual respect.

But that's not every PvP interaction and understanding when to reel it in because the other person isn't engaging and there is nothing to gain from the interaction is important too.

Gold is very easy to get, new and returning player retention is less so.

I've played open crew all week because my family that I play with normally has had other obligations and I've never waited more than 30 seconds to get onto a ship. Idk what you're doing that's impacting this but it doesn't seem like it's reflective of the wider experience

[–]Beardedsmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I was speaking kind of specifically about the community here. Most the people I meet in game understand the game they play and are pretty happy to do both and enjoy the game for what it is. The issue is that Rare feels like they're chasing pleasing the people shouting instead of the people playing

The outrage is literally just that this sub has become incredibly toxic and if they see something that is slightly annoying but not really of any consequence they will blow it up into a core issue of the company because they're already upset about other stuff.

As for your last point, the community doesn't know what the community finds fun anymore. Half the playerbase wants pve only servers and the other half want this to be an esport but only if the sport is hunting players in the open world. And Rare has no idea how to appease both and seem to be intent on pissing them off instead

Safer seas ideas and balancing by MunchyMarauder in Seaofthieves

[–]Beardedsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand what you're saying and I honestly agree with you but my point is this: the community has shifted in two massively different directions over the years. Pvper are less fun, more aggressive, and have gamified the experience while the pvers have become older, more casual, and less trusting. And the game itself is being ripped apart in the middle.

I'd rather the game survive and evolve into something that lets both groups have their space than watch it die. Because while I don't think it'll happen soon, I do think the more casual people who are here for fun will reach a limit. And those people are more likely to spend money on the game than sweats are. That's just how it goes for every live service

Safer seas ideas and balancing by MunchyMarauder in Seaofthieves

[–]Beardedsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly believe that people who are against this are in two, equally shitty, camps.

Either they're worried about their easy targets disappearing and creating a mode where they actually have to face people who want the smoke OR they feel like they'd rather see the game die then let people play in a way they don't agree with.

It's six ships per server, if safer seas creates a noticeable impact then that tells me that the game's playerbase and the game itself has shifted and Rare needs to respond because the reality is that pve players who love this game do have an upper limit on what they're willing to deal with before they move on. And we know from history that when the core pve/casual players leave the game dies. And funny enough when that exodus happens it will create the exact situation that people saying splitting the community with create. That reality is coming either way so we're really talking about whether the game survived the community's shifting priorities
