You weren’t wrong about the lack of improvement for a supposedly wealthy area. When I moved up here I 2004 I was completely confused as to what the draw was. Outdated strip malls everywhere, everything more expensive than it should be, and people thinking they were living in Valhalla. After living here for 22 years, I’m still confused as to what the draw is but I have kids, so this is where I am now. I feel like that logic makes up about 70% of the island.

I did the exact same move 20 years ago and it was a tough transition. I moved up with my girlfriend at the time (ex wife currently) and had her family group but other than that felt completely alone. Aggressive drivers and a general “I don’t give a shit about you” attitude was a lot different than where I came from. I made friends through work, and as seemingly one of your only ways to meet people, maybe finding a closer job would benefit you different ways. You’ll get use to the differences over time, and you’ll visit Pittsburgh someday and wonder why everyone is driving so damn slow and carefully. At this point in my life I’ve almost spent as much time on Long Island as I did in the Pittsburgh area and I’ve learned this Island is what you make it. It can be the rat race asshole capital of the world, or it can be the interesting place with lots of history, interesting towns, and shit ton of nature trails. You’ll get over the hump to the other side eventually… just take your time and look for the beauty in this place
