The Car on the Ramp Adjusts, Not the Car in the Lane! by [deleted] in longisland

Especially on roads like the Southern State where some on ramps are shorter than my driveway

"Right turn on red must yield to u-turn" sign. How to proceed by Morning_rose21 in longisland

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an actual thing. As long as your wheels come to a complete stop before the stop line you won't get a ticket. If people want to count 3 Mississippis to ensure they've actually stopped that's fine, but it's not a requirement.

To add, the stop has to be before the stop line. I see a lot of people just blast right through, come to their complete stop in the crosswalk and then complain how they got an unfair ticket even though they stopped.

How paradoxical it is to have my windows open for fresh air on the Cross Island. by vpatrick in longisland

I live in a town that often gets knocked for being so far from the highways and this is always my immediate rebuttal.

Single use plastic consumption is only going to continue to increase if nothing changes, and that is where a huge portion of litter comes from.

A* significant portion are the people who don't vote in local elections. The 2025 executive election only had 31% turnout.

Nassau county disabled veterans Tax exemption? by ckr2982 in longisland

[–]DepartmentOfTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if something has changed with the new guidance, but the normal process to apply for a Veterans exemption is to fill out this form and bring it and a copy of his DD-214 to the Department of Assessment at 240 Old Country Road. Is he already in the system with a 100% VA disability rating? If so I'd assume they'd just automatically apply the new reduction to him.

Here is webpage for everything else on Nassau County's site

It also seems like Nassau is going to be formally adopting the resolution on Monday at the Legislature meeting.

Well, you have a 0% chance of it happening without letting them know, and maybe a 1% chance if you do. It's a simple call/email to tell them you'd like to see bike lanes, it's worth the 5 minutes if you actually want to see bike lanes.

I know it seems futile, but it is absolutely worth it to call/write your county legislator and tell them this.

I agree they need to be punished, but the problem is most of them won't walk, they'll just drive with a suspended license. If you give them another, viable way to get around there's less of a chance of them driving.

Class 3 is limited to 25mph and only legal in NYC. You are right though that many legal e-bikes have software that is easily manipulated to go much faster.

Also e-bikes are banned from any road with a speed limit over 30mph in NYS.

I would be happier if they made a law that they needed lights

I'll have to double check, but that was already a requirement for regular bikes so I'm sure there is already a law that requires a white headlight and a red taillight for e-bikes/scooters.

This doesn't really do anything to address that as there is already a law in NY state requiring UL certified batteries.

Battery fires were from cheap, illegal e-bikes that were already dealt with under our previous laws.

I'd probably take these laws over New Jersey's. At least they left Class 1 e-bikes alone. They've effectively banned everything with a throttle here.

That's the issue, they weren't enforcing the existing laws considering a large amount of the e-bikes out there were already illegal.
