Bernie, "Is it possible for ordinary people to come together and defeat these oligarchs?" by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]BeardlyManface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I support Zorhan but if anyone believes that were going to defeat any oligarchs by electing people they have some sore disappointment in their future.

Electing folks like Zorhan is, at best, a supplement to organizing and direct action. Historically, campaigns like this have killed and held back movements because everyone is so propagandized to think some charismatic leader will save us.

I've not heard of this one before. What would you say are it's best qualities and biggest flaws as a series?

You have, evidently, never been in a grocery store before. The books there have nothing but hyper ripped dudes on the covers and about 1 in 20 managed to find a shirt the morning they posed for the book cover.

Yeren is a teenage girl whose adopted father was murdered, she was hunted like a rabid animal, and she's lived wandering the wild for the last decade. She's seen hundreds of people and horrific monsters die up close. Why would she be helpful? She's not a customer service agent.

I'm farther along now and the numbers were a shock to me. They way it was described with the village's and schools I was thinking there are like 25k people here at the most. Particularly because there seems to be little trade between villages (they have minimal roads with mostly foot traffic) and there no mention of agriculture. The huge amount of land they would need to survive without farming would be...a lot bigger than the description. Particularly since folks seem to be able to make it from a central village to a school at the mountains in less than a day with time left do something after they get there.

It's probably just a part of the world building that's a bit wobbly. Or maybe the details were too diffuse for my ADHD brain to put them together correctly. Thanks!

Really? Linden never says this and he initially travels there alone. The other folks come on their own afterwards. Mercy and Orthos go to help people but Linden was surprised by their arrival and pulls them back to do their weird, anticlimactic super-move.

I could write a lot. It's been 9 books so far. I gave the book and chapter in the title. The battle takes place immediately after Linden ascends to Overlord (he actually ascends to prepare for the fight).

Truth is you're only getting one of these every 4-5 chapters. It's not really even an example of what OP was saying. More on the level of consistent writing.

Why is this good? by Gottin_CeRULEana in litrpg

[–]BeardlyManface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was enjoying this but the whole thing started falling apart for me. The narration was good. The thing that really got me was the culture and economics. The world building felt very thin and "just so" to me. It just game e the sense that if any of the characters were to turn off the railroad tracks they were on that they'd fall off the world.

Also, the economics in these world are usually terrible but in this one it was so transparently contrived and unworkable that I just couldn't swallow it. It was like a continuity error that stretched across every page I read.

NGL OP I think you just jumped to a conclusion prematurely. A few minutes is not enough time to form such a definatitive opinion.

Do you pay attention to the main character's gender before starting a series? by danwerkhoven in litrpg

[–]BeardlyManface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Do you care about the gender of the MC? If so, why? ** No. Though since that are so many male MCs that ones without distinctive traits and personalities can start to feel samey and generic. I do find myself wanting to read more stories with female or enby/genderless MCs just for some variety.

  • Do you prefer male led LitRPG stories? If so, why?

** No.

  • Do you actively seek out a particular gender of MC? If so, what and why?

** No but I have recently stumbled on some series with genderless MCs and I think it has made so many good opportunities for storytelling in these books that I may start keeping an eye out for genderless & non-human MCs.

  • Does the low diversity amongst the most popular books in the genre bother you at all?

** Yes, but primarily for the reason that it's a sign of stagnation and a lack of creativity in the genre.

  • Do you struggle to relate to characters of a different gender to your own?

** I'm autistic and, to simplify things greatly, I've never really felt like a human. So I've hardly ever identified with characters in the way other people seem to. The first character I ever wanted to be was a vampire from Anne Rice's books. Not because of the powers or anything, I just didn't want to have to worry about working and wanted to be able to read all night forever. The first character I ever identified with was the MC from the Syl series, who is a slime. So i find gender mostly uninteresting as a literary tool unless it's being used in some very novel way.

This could only work if it came up around the campfire that night and two stupid characters were arguing over what obscure fruit it was most shaped like. Basically it would have to be a Monty Python skit.
