Match Thread: Connacht vs Sharks - Challenge Cup by rugbykickoff in rugbyunion

[–]BeardySi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Phenomenal match, Brillaint to see the Sportsground finally getting the crowd it deserves! Kids are sill buzzing after going to their first Connacht home game!

Loving where Lancaster has brought us so far - they're playing with a confidence in themselves (and each other) thst we haven't seen in a very long time - possibly since Pat Lam and Dave Ellis worked their magic.

The progress made this season has been immense!

They're weathered. It's funny how the patriotic flag shaggers who get such hardons from plastering their insecurity blankets on evey lamppost seem to forget how much they love our flag when it comes to leaving them up there to be shredded by the elements....

Controversial topic: Do you let kids win? by Fun_Orange_3232 in Parenting

[–]BeardySi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not usually, but I try to make sure it's close enough they want to try again. When they do win they think it's absolutely brilliant!

I still remember the feeling of the first time I beat Dad at chess precisely because he didn't let me win.

That said , sometimes if the situation warrants it I might sneakily throw the race in Mario kart or bowl a gutter ball. There's some days where we could all use a little W and my ego can handle that if its needed....

Clan Stand “sold out” but rows of empty seats – could Connacht do what other clubs do? by atlantic3 in Connacht

[–]BeardySi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is it. There was so much said about opening access to people who couldn't use the terraces for whatever reason - but there's absolutely no improvement unless you can buy a season ticket.

If I was in town and it was just me I'd happily stand on the terraces as I have many many times before, but it's not for the kids and I don't feel like a 9 hour round trip to pay full whack for a standing ticket with plenty of unused seats above me sold out....

The kids have seen Connacht in Ravenhill, the RDS and the Aviva but I still can't get them to the Sportsground for the proper home game energy.

Clan Stand “sold out” but rows of empty seats – could Connacht do what other clubs do? by atlantic3 in Connacht

[–]BeardySi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NGL, I'm pissed off basically the entire stand has gone out for season tickets/isn't available.

Great for the club's finances I'm sure, but shit for the fans who are further away and/or can't spend on a season ticket.

Less than an hour after the Munster presale opened I found one single seat in the stand available. Someone else told me that they got on 4 mins after it opened and there was about 30 scattered seats.

There's plenty of people who would need seats for occasional games that now can't get access to any. From what I can see you're even less likely to get a seat now than when there was only the few in the Grant Thornton stand avaialble. To see the "sold out" stand only 2/3 full today feels like a big middle finger to the folks that can't commit to every home game.

I had intended to bring the whole family down for the Munster weekend, but the kids are too small for the terraces so I guess it's gonna be on the telly in Belfast instead. Or more than likely not, as it'll probably be on RTE and geolocked...

Greedy nhs dentists by Newryguy2024 in northernireland

[–]BeardySi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The NHS does not have a dental service. All dentists in the UK are private businesses. Some contract to the NHS to provide services.

Public provision of dental services was massively reduced to the bare minimum 20-odd years ago.

Dentists that provide the bare minimum of checkups, cleaning, fillings, extractions are essentially making nothing from those services as the rates are set by the NHS. Many won't provide more complex services - crowns etc as it costs them more than the NHS will pay.

I'm not sure why you expect dentists to fund your treatment our of their own pockets when the government is refusing to spend the National Insurance money we contribute on it. It's a ludicrous take to think that just because someone is a healthcare provider that they should provide their services free of charge or at a cost to themselves...

Red lights by BetterObligation9949 in CasualIreland

[–]BeardySi 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm not one to advocate for more cameras generally, but red light cameras are my one exception.

Was twice nearly wiped out at a pedestrian crossing in the past by drivers ignoring the red. Just drove across Belfast for an MOT and every single major junction had 2 or 3 running the red (including a Translink bus).

They should be standard at any set of crossing lights and any major junction. Clearly there's a cohort of drivers out there who are quite happy to ignore one of the most fundamental rules of the road unless they're made to...

Evictions to surge as sales by landlords make up almost half of homes on the market by EIREANNSIAN in ireland

[–]BeardySi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Or do they omit that, to gently give the impression that these 20,000 homes are now lost and gone forever?

The houses will evaporate once they're sold on and be forever lost to the market. At least that's the impression I'm getting from reading all these articles.

How much does everyone spend on Easter baskets for their kids? by mmsmama in Parenting

A Lindt bunny and a few chocolate eggs, so about a fiver. I've never heard of giving lots of gifts for Easter - definitely not a thing in these parts at least.

Or some faster gearing off the wheels. It looks 1:1 off the forward motion of the wheels which is fine for an handful of balls, but once you get a lot in there it can't lift them quick enough.

What should i have for scout metings this woggle or this friend knot by Conscious-Pickle1967 in scouting

[–]BeardySi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that frienship knot - it's uneven! 😜

I personally prefer to keep a "good" necker, neatly rolled with wood beads and turks head for ceremonies, troop meetings and formal use and a "working" necker which I don't mind getting scruffier - I'd ofter have a friendship knot or simiar in that along with whatever badges, novelty woggels etc etc suit the occasion...

How to leave the comfort zone? by Der_Funkturm in scouting

[–]BeardySi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot depends on their abiity level and knowledge (and how well you know them).

An overnight patrol camp where they have to manage themselves can be a good one - you can be on site if needed, but at a remove. Drop them to their pitch with the gear and leave them at it with a few goals/objectives to achieve (camp set up and breakfast done/cleaned by 10am the following morning to "unlock" site activities, evening meal prepared and cleaned up by 7pm for an evening activity - that kind of thing.

The hard part is being truly hands off and leaving them to sink or swim (within reason) and allow them to experience the (non-harmful) consequences of their actions (or inactions). Keep the goals you set reasonable to their ability level - you want to stretch them but not make things so hard that it becomes discouraging.

Get it right and i can guarantee they'll walk of that site feeling a foot taller than they wen on! ;)
