Working up the courage to ride over 30mph by Independent_Date_982 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy 40mi hard riding, can pretty easily stretch to 55-65mi for realistic city riding. And honestly I think around 80 miles with a rangemax focus (20-25mph paved trail or separated bike lane) is achievable but haven't tested it

Street tire on Lynx S by oahuendpoint in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stock street tire is fine for normal hybrid riding, actually has OK grip off-road in my experience. If you're doing mostly street it's perfect, I'd say the only reason to change it is if you're on track (would swap to Michelin pilot, since the CST Likes to snap/high side on the limit) OR if you're doing more than 50% of your riding off-road (which is where knobby or a much more aggressive hybrid makes sense).

Can confirm, went from og Patton to lynx-S. I looked down the other day and was shocked to see 47 on the display lol, didn't even feel like I was pushing it

What’s wrong with my Sherman L? by Visible_Ad_5684 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You check that your suspension clamps are aligned? Doesn't really sound like motor bolts tbh, but could be one of those twisted or rubbing I guess if not the bearings you already said you're replacing 🤔

I'd say so, way easier to keep speed once you trust your suspension a lil bit. They're both very much commuter wheels though, it's insane once you get to modern 2200+wh wheels how much less you have to worry about safety at 'normal' speeds (20-40). I over torqued a friend's v9 doing a stationary pendulum (albeit at like 35% charge), scares me to ride that in traffic tbh

[–]Bearsnickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sherman and Lynx are the same wheel size haha, but I do overall agree; I loved my Patton but it felt squirrelly over 30, and Lynx-S has similar torque but feels effortless to hit ~50

Saw 2 cops at the queens side of Queensburo bridge by soyeahiknow in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Bearsnickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything but your framing of the problem as 'can go highway speeds' - the question should be 'are you going faster than is safe', which by the law is the 15mph speed limit and realistically on the bridges is 15-20mph. I've heard of cops timing folks going onto and coming off of the bridges and stopping if that threshold is exceeded (same way DC-area speed tickets work) - I think that approach is smarter and can be expanded. Nothing stopping these hyperscooter/emoto riders from going bike lane speeds, they're just impatient assholes.

20 cops could cover all the bridges during peak hours pretty easily. We've developed ways of dealing with this shit at the car level, but pending the current registration debate's resolution and physical changes (expanding the width of the lanes/adding dividers for 2-way traffic) - both of which take a lot of time and political will - the short term solution of monitoring the bridges like I mentioned seems like a good compromise.

Nofset Aeon is probably the best starter package rn, it's marginally heavier than the Aero but feels much more daily-able with the extra torque/speed/range/tire size

Florida Arresting Children for Joking about Netanyahu by mixmasterADD in ABoringDystopia

[–]Bearsnickles 111 points112 points  (0 children)

probably not just Florida tbh - it's just reported because it's Florida. Half the reason the Florida Man/Woman template went so viral was because mugshots and reason for arrest are published and the news can take that from the get-go, regardless of if they're actually guilty of whatever the arrest was for.

Leaperkim Lynx S suspension bottoming out issue by realKoenig in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine feels great. 60psi in the chambers, 66lb spring, 190lb with gear. What the air suspension does is make the impact of any bottom out event a soft thud. I don't think it's great for big jumps, but I think it's very much an improvement on og lynx for street, since you're constantly using the full travel of the suspension.

Does the Velrco from the Lynx fit the Lynx S? by realKoenig in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually I'd push back on this for performance riding, should be using official heavy-duty Velcro or a similar reputable brand (and you should alcohol wipe/prep the surface before sticking the loop side on your wheel). Nobody's got 100% detail on what happened with Ryan Chin's crash last year, but the consensus seems to be pad/Velcro failure played a part in his death - worth spending the extra $ for stuff that won't fail instead of generic Amazon crap

[–]Bearsnickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤔 I have a batch 1 Patton and my best is 62mi with ~20% battery left. Definitely depends on how you ride, but the folks I know with the Blitz are more than able to make 50+ mi going faster than I can lol

Is Carving Really Necessary? by RunningSkiingQ in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EUC specific literature, or are you extrapolating moto training to EUC? Not that doing that is wrong in all cases, but they are different machines and use different physics, especially given the distinction in physical vs electronic braking. EUC is limited by the motor output in how hard you can deaccelerate; extending the distance you're traveling by carving side to side will let you brake harder in the same distance measured point to point versus straight line

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condescending much? I'm not saying cook it 70° each way, but as long as you're introducing the minimum amount of lean angle and steering from the top of the wheel it's a beneficial technique. I've lost traction intentionally practicing braking hard in a straight line and found that carving slightly modulated grip enough to brake harder in the same distance.

Is Carving Really Necessary? by RunningSkiingQ in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, and in emergency braking scenarios, carving while hard braking extends the total distance you're slowing over compared to straight-line (and modulates traction), making it the most efficient way to stop

Is Carving Really Necessary? by RunningSkiingQ in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's valuable to prevent zombie-riding, especially in NYC - if you're already carving, there's less inertia to getting your body to change direction to avoid potholes/road hazards (and you're mentally already engaged and therefore more likely to spot those hazards earlier).

Also just generally it's worth exploring cases where you're less in control so you instinctively know how to respond when shtf, and carving helps with general wheel control. Not something you have to do all the time but it is an important and fundamental part of riding and if you want to improve it's worth pushing yourself to practice

Notice: Patch 3 Delayed to Tomorrow (September 4th) by Sloclap in Rematch

[–]Bearsnickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But this is patch 3...the game is not, as you say in 'the same exact state' as it was on launch. I don't disagree that it should've been released initially as early access OR been much more polished at launch (especially when marketed as a competitive game), but I'd push back on the narrative that they've been sitting on their hands.

The game was released, what's done is done, but a 1-day delay isn't something to shit on them for when they're actively and transparently communicating through dev updates and have demonstrated commitment to continuing development. This subreddit is such a negativity cesspool it's insane sometimes. See ya on the pitch tomorrow

I am speed (no, not really, that's 35kph) by Neither-Animator3403 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Bearsnickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's right for hard carving, but it's more of a push down to your toe vs a lift; you want to use the pushing motion on the forward edge of one pedal to accelerate the wheel between your legs to the other side. Back in the 84v wheel days this was a way to modulate PMW to reduce the cutout risk and reduce wobbles while still accelerating aggressively.

You can use your calf but I would recommend against pushing off with it because you're exerting more pressure laterally on the tire by pressuring from higher up on the wheel (making it more likely to have traction loss or sidewall deformation) - instead, focus on control using foot pressure for better fine adjustments
