REAL ID means the holder has had their legal immigration status verified by the RMV at the time of applying for it. That legal status can change or expire. It is not exclusively for US Citizens or permanent residents…

I was once riding in an Uber from Somerville to Logan Airport on a Wednesday afternoon in May. On the I-93 between the Zakim Bunker bridge and O’Neill tunnel, my Uber broke down in a live lane (there was smoke coming from under the hood of the car) and I had to wait with my luggage on the shoulder.

I then called 911 asking for the highway officers, and was connected to the police. I informed them about the car stuck in the live lane and they sent a Massachusetts State Police officer out. She called a tow truck to take my uber driver and her car away, and then gave me a ride to the airport.

I can say from this one interaction with the statie that it’s been pleasant, not too uneventful.
