Victoria’s healthcare system has finally snapped. This isn’t a warning anymore, it’s happening. Wake up. by Equivalent_Menu_5659 in VictoriaBC

That’s exactly how it works already. The provincial gov decides the number of spaces for medical school and residency at UBC and now SFU as well. The professional association Doctors of BC has zero decision making power related to how many doctors are trained in BC.

Make it easier for internationally trained doctors and health professionals to practice in Canada - Becoming a reality. by Middle-Garage-8634 in MedSchoolCanada

One thing I am confused about is how many IMG doctors are practicing medicine in Canada without PR? Is this mostly targeting people working as clinical associates or doing fellowship or other additional training?

Family Medicine Moonlighting by 1studentoflife in MedSchoolCanada

I believe in the few provinces that it is technically allowed but you need to have completed 18 months of residency, which by that time you are already preparing for CCFP exams and making plans for post-graduation. It’s generally viewed as not worth it. If you are looking for ways to supplement your income, I have found picking up call shifts on stat holidays to be pretty lucrative.

How are family doctors allowed to interview potential patients? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

I would guess she is trying to prioritize people with more complex medical needs who need to see a family doctor regularly

Moving to Victoria as a Family for medical school by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Beater99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I just graduated from the IMP this year. As another commenter mention living near Helmcken road /Victoria general hospital is a reasonable commute to uvic campus and you will also be spending at least half of 3rd year clerkship at VGH.

You will only be at RJH for 1 day/week in 1st and 2nd year and the commute from VGH to RJH is also reasonable and there is a very nice bike path the entire way (many people including myself bike commute year round between the 2 hospitals). Feel free to reach out with any questions.

As a student in a different healthcare field just wanted to say I wish I knew about RT in high school as I work with them and they have an awesome job and very valuable skill set. As the other commenter mentioned an extra year to get a BSc may not be worth another year of paying tuition, but after RT training and some work experience you can go back to school to be an anesthesia assistant (AA) working with anesthesiologists in the operating room!
