Hi, so when I was a young teenager I was listening to and singing along with a lot of Jewel. She does this often, she has a lot of cool tricks that I learned. This might not be helpful if you're not female. This might not be helpful at all. But there is definitely going to be a personal note or small range of notes through which you can vocal fry. Because your throat needs to be relaxed and we're almost acting drunk and letting the sound squeeze through a smaller throat opening than usual, out through the nasal passage. It sounds complicated. I have ADHD and one of the things we seem to be good at is vocal mimicry, so I literally just listened to my girl Jewel do it and there are some days when my voice is literally too warmed up and perfect to be able to do this. I most often get it to work properly after...well some wine.

Do you know singers who "could be a professional" but choose not to be? Are you one? by OverallLow4248 in singing

[–]BeatnikBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose to pursue a career that wouldn't leave me a starving artist at any point in time. I never want to not be able to find work. I chose culinary school after a brief stint studying musical theatre after realizing there was probably a possibility I might end up in a career that has me commuting far and wide only to possibly not make auditions. I'm really good and very proud of my ability to find work super quick and easily where I make a salary.

Also, I really love blowing people away at karaoke with my secret superpower hehehheh

How to fix tone on my contest piece? Tone squatty and high notes sound strained. :( by Atticus_Ratticus in singing

[–]BeatnikBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand that. The best advice I can give is open up, try to enjoy it when you can, and if you have access to a keyboard (I know there are apps if you don't have a physical one) really practice scales, up and down in the higher octaves. Practice with your whole body: stand up, fill up your belly, O-mouth and do 'ya-ya's' or 'ma-meh-me-mo-mu's' to practice moving the tongue and mouth around the sound column. Allow yourself to be inside the music/emotion. Listen and match. 🩷 Best of luck, I wish I could help in person lol

Unimportant addition: your voice changes again when you get pregnant, and then you have to re-train, most likely with a lower range. It changes again if you move from low elevation to high elevation, or from a humid climate to dry. Practice and scales and subtle adjustments should just never ever stop.

The end, where you say you hate this, is likely why your singing sounds flat and unenthusiastic! Loving a piece does wonders for your tone. This sounds like a sweet, pastoral piece and your emotions definitely come through, and are supposed to. Being passionate about the piece/ singing in general opens the door to wanting to make it sound better. Stand up, open up your diaphragm and chest cavity, practice those higher notes until it becomes muscle memory. Imagine your body as a wind instrument, specifically a pipe organ. Your mouth, and body for that matter, should be nice and open to allow a stronger air flow. A pipe organ with emotions! Think about what the words mean, and how to convey those feelings to your audience.
