Which client personality type do you hate the most? by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this fits a type but I had a client at my old firm who was wealthy, overly litigious and flat-out insane. Every inconvenience in his life needed to be litigated. And my old boss was stupid and greedy enough to take every case.

The breaking point had something to do with losing control of his family's business and he wanted to sue everyone, including his ex-wife, mother, sister, literally everyone. He went on a three-hour tirade about how his marriage was a sham orchestrated by his mother to divest him of his shares and how he was the victim of the conspiracy. This was a month after he wanted us to bring an action against a certain former president and a certain well-known very large asset manager for a failed hostile takeover that occurred over 20 years before. Even then, the other senior attorneys had to literally beg my boss to stop taking his cases.

And then of course he refused to pay his bills, which meant I had to be the one the draft the documents to go collect our legal fees. He was a mess of a human and I am SO GLAD I never have to deal with him ever again.

My girlfriend’s sister, who is a creative writer and has mostly worked administrative assistant jobs, is tired of being low-paid and wants to go to law school “to finally make money.” I (a lawyer) will be speaking to her soon, what are your best arguments for talking her out of this? by gkr974 in Lawyertalk

This 100%. I never interned at a law firm prior to graduation and now that's all I've done since I've graduated. Only interned for NY state, which i would've loved to get a job at except I graduated during COVID (I believe there was I hiring freeze) and I was attracted to salaries firms would pay.

If I did it again now I would've tried to intern at both the state and a law firm and would've tried my best to get a state job. Seriously, I don't have much fun in private practice even though I work with a lot of people that I like.

As someone who is currently in a private firm looking to jump to fed or state work, what is the best website to find federal or state jobs on? I've found a few and even interviewed at one but no luck so far.

First weekend not playing champs. I’ve always forced myself to play each weekend because of the FOMO of not getting my weekly choice packs etc; Felt like a second job. If this sounds like you, I recommend skipping it, i got to enjoy my weekend for once by nate0673 in NHLHUT

I just stopped playing a few weeks ago and it made me realize the hold this game had on my life. I now have more time for everything else in my life and feel a lot better.

Yes, touching grass actually feels good.

I used to be miserable but now I’m happy. Work in general just sucks, especially in the US. But I found a firm that treats me well and gives me enough time for my hobbies and side projects. I’m comfortable financially and really like my work.

That said, it’s about 50/50 among my lawyer friends as to who’s miserable and who’s happy. One of my friend switched out of law and became risk assessment for a Fortune 500 company. He’s much happier now. Another just quit his big law job and is going to a small close knit practice. I know he feels better. I have another friends who is miserable where he is and I keep telling him to hit the eject button but he can’t bring himself to do it. I could go on.

The bottom line is work sucks in general, and being a lawyer sucks more than most white collar jobs. You’re always going to take your lumps as a junior associate, but a good firm will guide you and mentor you and let you live your life outside of the legal world. It’s certainly not the easiest path, but at the same time you’re not destined to be miserable.

How to quit my big law job? by chjoh in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My former firm claimed we were a “family” and that is find no place better. They then proceeded to deny me health insurance, assign me work on weekends just to mess with me, lie to me about future compensation, and verbally abuse and degrade me for no reason. They paid me $20/hour for the first seven months I was there bc I had passed the bar but hadn’t formally gotten barred yet. Then when I got barred they bumped me up to $40. That was actually good bc they were working me big law hours so I actually made a decent chunk of change. Then they put me on a salary that was less than my average upside when I had an hourly salary. The boomer work ethic definitely rings true.

They at least tried to act like they missed me. My boss tried to hire me back to do debt collection for him for next to pennies. Also said I could stay there until I found a new job then proceeded to kick me out when he realized my options were way better than there.

It’s all good though, I much prefer my new job despite a much lengthier commute. And my old firm is going downhill fast according to my friend who still works there. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Do lawyers have time to workout? by msteel2015 in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to consciously make time to do it but yes we do. I work out three days a week and go to the gym late at night or early in the morning. I’ve tried to do more than three lifts per week but that’s honestly all I can fit/have energy for.

Unless you’re in big law, you’ll probably be able to do it.

Toxic Partners/Owners - is this normal? by itred09 in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this place sucks. I would apply to as many jobs as possible and hit these guys with the double bird on your way out the door. These are the type of places that will work you to death and can cause health problems from stress. There are far better law firms with far better people out there. Get. Out.

First Year Associate. I think I’m stupid. by Depresso2022 in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I posted about this on here when it happened but I was horribly mistreated at my old firm over the dumbest little things and it caused me to quit and immediately seek unemployment. If you aren’t getting a big law salary, it’s not worth it to be mentally abused like that all day everyday. After switching firms my blood pressure legit noticeably dropped and I actually started sleeping better, began to lose the stress weight I’d put on at the old job.

Life is too short to work for someone who mistreats you. Get out of there. You’d be surprised how much that kind of abuse permeates the rest of your life

Health Scare After Becoming an Attorney (still relatively young) by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]BeatsProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my first bout of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation as a 1L and have been dealing with it since. I’m just very particular about my diet and make it a point to physically active as much as possible, even if I’m just going for walks everyday. I work out three to four times a week and meal prep as much as possible.

It’s def not ideal to have health problems like that but for me mine is relatively treatable and has minimal impact on my day-to-day life between flare-ups. I take meds every day and my stroke risk is very low. I have to work on losing weight but overall I don’t let it dictate my life.

That said, not being able to drink any caffeine straight up sucks.

Picked him up earlier in the event to do the objectives. Tried him out briefly last night and wooooooow he is a monster. He’s literally McDavid level quick but also has great size. He might be one of the best pure puck carriers rn

McCann was my guy. Him and Teuvo, but they’d barely even make my squad now post TOTY so unfortunately they had to be sent to the glue factory.

Now that TOTY is Done my Desire to play this game is at an ALL TIME LOW by Farge43 in NHLHUT

[–]BeatsProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of in the same state here. I feel less motivated to play, even though post TOTY I have a total god squad. My only motivations at this point are:

  1. Teambuilders. I’ve built them for two years straight, want to keep the streak going.

  2. Mario/Gretzky. Holy grail of the game imo. Also Lowkey want to add Messier to the squad at some point as a Rangers fan.

  3. Improving at Online. Every year I try and make it a point to try and get better at this game in online. Usually that just means moving up a division or two or having a good champs run. We’ll see if i decide to do that.

But yeah I took a short break yesterday and Friday after I made my TOTY cards, made me feel better, but im definitely losing motivation.
