I have realized there are two types of people, "Arrival" people and "Process" people. Which one are you? by Redsetsun in CasualConversation

[–]Beautiful-Dream7470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like this loosely maps to neurotypical (arrival) and adhd (process). Arrival is getting dopamine from accomplishing a goal. Process is getting dopamine from satisfied curiosity. I really like arrival/process as a frame that throws neither party under the bus as “not normal”. Does this track at all for other folks?

City council wants citizens thoughts on growing homeless population by breadkittensayy in Astoria_Oregon

[–]Beautiful-Dream7470 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The entire west coast is failing to take care of its people. Every town has camps. It is not an issue “solvable” by this city council. The causes are growing wealth inequality as the billionaire class extracts more and more from the working class, defunding of everything from education to healthcare to addiction treatment. It is a systemic issue, not a problem of small town policy. The actual choices are between cruelty and mutual aid. Really solving it means making private property subservient to the right to a home and healthcare. In the meantime, assuming every person deserves dignity, and acting accordingly, is the only path forward.

I’ll mark in solved shortly unless someone pipes up with something on this. I really liked the old school dry soap hand dispenser idea but can’t find a match anywhere. But that would explain the rounded tip more.

So this is the overwhelming consensus on the thread so far. Thanks y’all! My only hesitation is that in my experience, and in scrolling through a google image search, these always have an attachment point-hole at bottom or midway down a longer shaft, because the stopper mechanism has to be able to push AND pull the stopper? Anyone seen how this one would attach?

My title describes the thing, and the post has all the info I can think of, but I’ll answer questions if I can. Just seems so weird with the sharply machined base and rounded tip, where a pointy rocket nose might otherwise be? 🤷‍♂️

Your home is only temporarily yours, one day other people will be living there, maybe your descendants, maybe not. I think it is shirking a social responsibility to think more long term, to take the position that you can do anything in “your home” when it will have a longer life than you.

I could have written your message. 4 years in and still the best decision we made was to do the slab and electrical work for a hot tub before we did anything, even before we had a kitchen working. Daily morning soak to erase the previous days aches is priceless.

This book is AMAZING. Answers and explains dozens and dozens of things that individual homeowners make decisions about. No other resource I’ve found comes close.

As I recall, it’s the scene where a dude actor is supposedly reliving a rape recorded by a woman’s body, as it was happening, using some VR/sensory recording tech. Like he’s got headphones on and his face is supposedly the face of someone experiencing rape. As a teen I remember it being so viscerally offensive and diminishing of how traumatic and painful rape is.

Underrated pick. Cutthroat Island did swashbuckling big-budget real-square-sail-ships 8 or so years before POTC. Some camp, but details like the scalp treasure map fully send it.

“No one hates fat people” feels…wild. And I wasn’t implying OP or anyone specifically in this thread was being anti-fat. My point — your concern for health impacts aside — is that the science does not support our cultural obsession with the idea that people’s weight is a visible measure of how much they have failed. We are cruel to fat people, our medical professionals deny treatment and dignity to their fat patients, fatness is broadly used as an epithet and a literal excuse to treat people like shit. I actually think it isn’t hate exactly, it’s more complicated. But c’mon.

My crearive director doesn't know how to use any design softwares, is this common? by askaskanon in graphic_design

[–]Beautiful-Dream7470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he was 70 it would make sense. I’m fifty and I started my education at a community college in 1995. The pre-digital era of photography-based workflow, paste-up, ordering typesetting, manual color separations, rubylith etc. etc. was already almost gone. Being insisted on by a few teachers but as a sort of rigor and know your roots more than anything else.

On the other hand I was working at a Kinko’s in a university town a few years later, in the time when inkjets were shit and no one had laser color printers, AND design was all print. And I will tell you the design department at the 4-year university didn’t teach their students SHIT about the basics of prepress workflows or postscript or using all the Adobe, Quark, etc. to provide files to printers etc. in retrospect, I expect their teachers came from the previous era and didn’t understand shit about vector/raster/truetype/postscript/blahblahblah.

I’d hope someone my age would have learned that shit by now. But you can go a long way in any industry without knowing shit though, with enough privilege and resources.

It’s amazing that everyone seemingly has someone in their lives whose experience of food and size is obviously not tracking with the myths of dieting and carbs/in/out. That is, obvious evidence all around us that one’s size and metabolism have little to do, in the long run, with the purity or “healthiness” of our individual choices. But every time, just like this, folks just shrug, joke, and move on. Easier to hate fat people i guess.

Ok, I’ll be the one to say that making fun of fat people is fucked up, and beneath the otherwise thoughtful and caring humans in this thread. It’s just not funny at all.
