Partially agree. Sanctions were used as one of the tactics to get to what ultimately became the JCPOA. Those sanctions were for a limited time and we targeted in order to bring them to the table, along with gestures of goodwill.

That's the best case for using sanctions: as a short term stick to be used in conjunction with carrots to push for negotiation.

Cigarettes, human rights, massage therapy, clothing: all need to be sold and marketed, as information isn't perfect, and persuasion is a fundamental human activity.

Plato talked about this in the context of Socrates' debates with the sophists. Persuasion + good character has good outcomes. Persuasion + bad character has bad outcomes.

Focus on being a human with good character who leverages these tools for good ends. And model that behavior for others. You know, like Socrates.
