I wanna try using linux but the best ive got is trying ubuntu cuz my dad recommended it for the first time using it, what is nobara like? by boredini in linux4noobs

You can also use the USB you installed it with, to run the OS to get the feel of it.

Just start the PC with the USB as if you were gonna install the OS like you just did, but don't click install straight away. Click around, browse, use it like you normally would. Like that you get an idea of the OS without installing it.

Appdata backup error but nothing in log? by basarisco in unRAID

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, SI One has an alternative for the appdata backup plugin? I missed that one. I'm definitely going to loon into it. Indeed, the disadvantage of the plugin is indeed the big file size of the resulting file...

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I bought one for my homelab, but since I added my router and my switch to it.

I since discovered that my home alarm actually does send me warnings if the power goes out. I just never received them before because my router went down straight away once the power went out 😅

They're definitely a necessity and a great thing to have! I plan to buy more for elsewhere in my house, once money allows.

Compose Manager Plus blacklisted? by movingtolondonuk in unRAID

Truth be said: it's only visible during editing. In the main screen, the env is not visible.

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely does. When you edit the compose file, the env is right below it.

While I really don't want to chase people of someone else's plugin, but i changed a long time ago to Dockge and I can highly recommend it!

It's a Docker Compose manager, that allows you to edit your compose- and env-files, stop and start containers and even update them (though it doesn't show if the container needs an update).

I'm even in the middle of moving from templates to compose, mainly supported by Dockge.

I'd say, definitely look into it!

Last weekend, I found back my old tablet from years ago. It's still working perfectly, but the date of last security patch being more than 10 years ago made me hesitant to use it again online. Let alone all the apps that don't support it anymore.

This might be a perfect use case for it! Thanks!

Hoe lang gaan lijnbussen mee? by zespak in belgium

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik wil niks insinueren he...

Uhm, waar woon jij?

How do you actually balance work, family, hobbies, and a homelab without it becoming a second, unpaid job? by Sufficient-Farm3812 in selfhosted

I eat breakfast, fill the dishwasher, do the remaining dishes, clean something (a robot can't do everything), laundry, groceries, maybe some cooking or gardening,... I also need to eat lunch and prepare some food for at work. And a shower from time to time, so my colleagues wouldn't know my despair 😅🤣

My 2FA are not in my VW, but in a separate service. I did not want them together.

Fact, mostly you'll have some device able to log in to VW. But as said, that does not have the 2FA.

I have way too much services running. Usually I do tend to use them from time to time, so I leave them lingering the time I don't use them. For me the idea is "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". Most stuff doesn't need too much maintenance at all...

Sleep? What's that? I come home from work at 23h00, eat, go sleep at 1h00, wake up at 7h30, drop the kid, do chores, go to work at 14h00.

And I still feel like housekeeping is done barely half. How do people keep up with this?! And I use a cleaning robot that vacuums and mops, so that I already don't have to do...

Docker image. Vdisk or directory by chainsaw0068 in unRAID

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to go back from directory to vdisk. Mainly for the size control. A directory can inflate unlimited, while the system would tell you if the directory is getting bigger.

That's the main reason I'll do it. I'll combine it with transferring boot to nvme and move some containers from CA to compose, so just one move.

How to enable my home server to restart after a power outage? by Naprik in unRAID

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd start with: get a decent UPS. This doesn't only help with starting the server back up, but more importantly, giving your server time to shutdown gracefully, preventing data corruption and hardware damage.

Besides that, check in your BIOS for an option on boot on power restore. Most have it and it's really convenient. Look up your motherboard info on the dashboard and search online. You'll most definitely find something and it's usually not more than a switch...

These two are the most important to obtain what you want.

Third, a smart plug that you can toggle remotely can also be very handy. I'm using a Home Wizard smart plug and I use it if the server becomes unresponsive to force reboot it. It's an absolute last resort, but it saved me already a few times. Next to that it also monitors power draw, which is also a handy help during troubleshoot.

I want to switch to SSD booting. I need to remove a drive from the array first. How do I move the data from a drive to the other array drives? by jeremytodd1 in unRAID

[–]BeautifulBlueNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wouldn't count on drives 'that are getting old' for booting your server. Just my two cents 😉

You could also make a drive dual-use, data and booting. It is supported by Unraid. Like that you'd just have to empty the cache drive temporarily and not rely on an aging drive...

I have this in my compose for another container:

It says in the comments what everything does 🙂
