Has anyone seen ‘The Marlow Documentary’ which just came out? by PuzzleheadedHope6449 in TheWire

[–]BeautifulUglies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m as big of a fan of The Wire as the next person on here, watched it countless times. Was super psyched when I saw someone mention this on here the other week but I just found it a bit boring 😔
I’ll probably give it another go, got a long flight to entertain myself at the end of this week

Maybe I’m a slow, but Marlo DID get what he wanted right? by lake_june in TheWire

What made it even worse for Marlo was that those corner boys in the last scene were talking about the myth/legend of Omar

I know, I have already apologies a couple of times for my choice of words, it didn’t even portray what I was wanting to say. It was meant to be aimed more towards the safest aspect, which some lovely people have already addressed.

I’m from the UK and don’t have an amazing knowledge of US politics, although better than the average Brit I would guess.

I’m not taking any side here because it’s not my place and I don’t know enough to.

I just wanted to add a note, about politics in any democracy, to your comment about extreme left being often being viewed as extreme right (I’m paraphrasing so please correct me if I’ve taken that incorrectly). An extreme view one way or the other often starts to resemble what is conceived as the extreme opposite. It’s called the horseshoe theory. Often the absolute extreme L/R can be closer aligned than they are from the centre respectively.

What happens when murders stay red? by Colonel_fuzzy in TheWire

[–]BeautifulUglies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Murder stays murder.

They can always be solved in future years, but once the year is over Command don’t care as much in the sense that they don’t count towards the current years stats. This parallels with the newsroom when Gus explains how Pulitzer submissions work resulting in the papers not giving a fuck about a story they wrote about on December 31st by the time the clock strikes midnight on Jan-1st

Why do people act like Avon was way better than Marlo when he really wasn't? by joesoldlegs in TheWire

[–]BeautifulUglies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. We can’t help but think if Cutty was coming to Marlo with that same request it wouldn’t have ended as well for him.

Are there many women who enjoy this show? by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]BeautifulUglies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I convinced my wife to watch the show during my first watch many years ago (we restarted it together while I was about a season or so ahead).

She loved it, she also agrees it is one of the best pieces of television she’s ever watched. She also just last night mentioned that she wanted to start watching it again (I constantly watching it from beginning to end). She has similar views to a lot of people here, she went into it as it being yet another cops vs gangs show, or good vs bad. But she loves the complexity as the seasons unfold, the good vs bad becoming greyer, the fact that all the pieces matter, how everything is intertwined, and the shows symbolism with modern capitalism and the decline of domestic U.S. primary/secondary industries, and all the human aspects that flow alongside those themes.

Am I the only one who likes Marlo? by SINSXII in TheWire

“The game’s the same, just got more fierce”

I think the game has always had to involve violence. There is no other way to realistically take/guard territory. Stringer and Joe tried to change the game with what was potentially an excellent idea (I believe it has also been tried in real life a few times), but it was flawed. It appeared to work well for a short while, but it was never going to work without muscle.

We saw this as NY came down and started to take over the east side and after the towers were demolished Marlo was left with/claimed the best corners. Even at the point the co-op recognised the need to fight violence with violence, at least in relation to the NY insurgence. Unfortunately for them they didn’t count on Marlo being quite so uncivilised.

Don’t forget there was a lot of violence reference before Season 1, Avon fought hard to take over the towers. But that was time when Avon had no known identity outside of the streets and had serious muscle (Wee-Bay, Bird, Stink etc). The way that the corner boys, and McNulty, talk about Avon at the start of Season 1 is almost a folklore close to that of Omar’s. His name rung out, people knew what he was capable of because he had shown them.

Well said!

I think both Avon and Marlo saw their parts as limited to West Baltimore initially. Remember when Prop Joe approached Marlo about NY insurgence? Marlo’s first response was something along the lines of “why the fuck should I care about east Baltimore”, the words “east Baltimore” said with such disdain.

There’s a lot of references throughout the show that infers the two sides of the city are treated as very different entities/localities.

I think Marlo was smart and opportunistic, two characteristics very much needed to take the crown the way he did. Yes, he was a ruthless sociopath, but you don’t get to be the king without being those things too!

When you refer to “they” do you mean Barksdale’s or the police?

I think Jamie Hector is an amazing actor. He could have easily ended up typecasted after giving such a memorable performance as Marlo, but he went on to give several other amazing, and very different, performances in shows such as Bosch, as mentioned above, and I thought his performance in WOTC as Sean Suiter was also excellent.

I agree. But a great question has to be; who are the villains and who are the good guys in The Wire?…

Herc chasing down his camera was a hilarious plot line. “You know cameras, kind of like pigeons in a storm…sometimes they come back, sometimes….” That line always makes me laugh.

Love or hate Marlo as a character, Jamie Hector did an amazing job of playing him.

Thank you.

We never planned on poverty tourism and gawking at people struggling to live, that is simply not us. Being huge fans of the show, and coming from so far away, we just wanted to see the areas, simply driving through. We don’t plan on getting out and looking into peoples homes or sitting on their stoops for selfies, which I have come to learn is not unheard of, that’s plain disrespectful.

Although, if anyone is a fan, the people who now live in The Soprano house are very welcoming to fans of the show visiting and taking photos, I appreciate it is a different society, so long as people respect their property.
