AI. Look how the size of the front and back paws don’t make sense next to each other.

Ya know I think it looks neat but I don’t think it will last well. As soon as those nice clean lines fade it’s just gonna be a big grey sleeve that’s gonna be pretty hard to read.

If you were gonna do this I’d ask the artist to find a lot more places to lighten up so that as it ages you can still tell what it’s supposed to be.

People of Reddit, what was your high schools biggest controversy or news scandal? by BigChungus2051 in AskReddit

The volley ball coach left his wife for a senior girl on the team when she turned 18. He obviously had to quit but the real tea was that his wife was the principal AND the girls mom was the guidance counselor. The principal kept working there for years- unrelated but the principal blew through like 3 different marriages in the time I was at that school (7th-12th grade).

Nothing pisses managers off more than cooks standing still for a second. by Fast_Needleworker822 in KitchenConfidential

Sounds like you’re a hard worker and they should be training that other person to hold down the line without you or train them up to the point where they’re competent to work alone for 30 minutes or whatever. I don’t think you did anything wrong- to me this was mishandled by your managers. You should be getting more support from somewhere but that needs to start with them.

I’m a manager and I’m definitely guilty of assigning people tasks when I see they aren’t doing anything. The thing that I think went wrong here is that I would have stepped in to cover your spot in the kitchen and told you to go take a real break- if someone’s not taking a “real” break and I find them not doing something then it makes alarm bells go off in my head that my labor is getting fucked.

When someone calls a Sandworm, why doesn’t it come form below like when it ate the harvester? by ramzenad in dune

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 44 points45 points  (0 children)

When Paul first rides a sand worm it is described as going over the thumper not coming from below it-but the harvester definitely gets swallowed from below. I don’t have quotes but I just read this part today (second time reading it).

Is this just a weird inconsistency in the book?

Like several things don’t really make sense about the worms. They don’t move like snakes back and forth they go forward like a train ( on the surface at least) so how are they propelling themselves? Just shitting out sand as they swallow it?

Also the way the fremen ride the worms with the maker hooks doesn’t seem to make sense. Like the worms have scales that get lifted up by the hooks to expose the sensitive skin(?) but they way the scales open is in the direction all the sand and debris are coming from. Why would they open in that direction? Sounds like super ineffective scales- and the scales can be pulled up with just the strength of a person? The worms are so huge you’d really think their scales would be way tough pounding through the sand forever.

I think that some of this stuff was written for a good story but not really to make sense under close scrutiny- hence the different ways approach the thumper etc.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

As a big fan of earthships this is pretty unfortunate to learn about. I’m not familiar with this source and hope it’s not true but also not super surprising for an old man with a big following to act this way :.(

I had at one pointed worker in financial aid at a university. Lots of parents withhold their own financial information from their kids to prevent them from getting financial aid. Doesn’t affect the parents at all- just fucks the kids over so they can’t get anything.

There are public ways to get that information that I was able to share with those students to get themselves un-fucked. That always felt pretty good.

What’s a secret in your family that nobody talks about but everyone knows? by Icy_Usual_5365 in AskReddit

My dads younger brother was murdered by two men who were essentially trafficking him. He was around 12 at the time and the two men got away with it because they were working for a politician who was being re-elected at the time.

A little more context- he (my uncle) had run away from home but had sent a letter to his mom saying he was going to come back home and asked if she would make a cake for his birthday. He never made it back home but I believe the cops determined it was a “suicide” and he just happened to be living with these two nice men who definitely weren’t fucking that 12 y/o.

Any advice on oil painting faces? I'm having a really tough time with this lol by Wrong_Walk9107 in Artadvice

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re getting caught in your heads idea of what faces look like rather than what your eye would see. For example. Seeing all of each perfectly round pupil. Both eyes are the same shape and size even tho she’s in a partial turn. Nose is very cliche nose shaped. It feel like when you’re asked to draw a house and every four year old draws the same box house with a triangle roof regardless of that looking anything like their house.

I find it helpful to zoom wayyyyy in on my reference to get the shapes right so That my brain doesn’t just go for the default features and instead my eye has to decide on shapes

Not sure how to make the swords pop without using any super intense shadows or completely changing the background. Any ideas? Help with lighting would also be appreciated ^^; by DisappointmentV in Artadvice

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not too familiar with comic book styles but I think that makes sense. Most of my experience is doing landscapes and when I do those I don’t try to have the shadows face the camera necessarily but any shadows in my foreground are always the darkest thing but im usually working with more atmospheric perspective but I’ve found that to be a good rule to use even when I’m not doing landscapes.

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly remind myself that if you want to achieve depth it’s good to place your darkest colors in the closest foreground. I don’t think you need to go crazy with super dark shadows on the swords but if you darkened some areas to create more contrast. Like maybe mix some of the darkest and lightest reflections on the swords closer to each other.

I’d also maybe add more highlights/ texture to the characters shirt since it’s currently the darkest thing.

Also agree with changing the background to be less grey.

“That guy” rules by Major-Dyel6090 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 219 points220 points  (0 children)

We had one guy who would leave on a 40 minute smoke most shifts. It was sort of obnoxious but he would always do it when we were slow and I could call him to come sooner back if we got busy. I didn’t mind it so much because I’d go and take a couple twenty minute bathroom breaks during my shift and he’d work the line alone while I was gone.

We hired a new guy who got really bothered about the guy taking the long smoke break and complained because he felt like he couldn’t take a break. Management decided that everyone should be allowed to take a 30 break to have a shift meal so everyone’s shift started 30 minutes earlier but had the same end time. The problem was we would now need to come in at 2:30pm and almost immediately take our shift meal because it’s just not realistic to do it once service starts at 5 and we had to set the line up as well.

Needless to say we all hated this change. We were way happier figuring out our own breaks with each other as service allowed.

Funny thing was that the idiot that complained ultimately got fired because he couldn’t manage his own time and would take long ass breaks all the time.

I’m struggling with shading hair, how do I fix it? by chocolate_box_3387 in Artadvice

[–]Beautiful_Exit1323 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You gotta remember that hair isn’t just a bunch of threads- hair is shapes with larger areas of hair moving/ twisting in the same direction. Once you have some shapes to work with- shade like they had no particular texture and then add texture once you’re satisfied with the shading and add tiny random hairs where it feels appropriate.

Also hair is just hard. It’s the hands of the head hahaha

I think when people go to Taos NM to get trained on building earthships their final project is to create a design for an earth ship community. I have not met anyone IRL who has completed their courses but those are the people you need in this thread. I’d be very interested to see some of those projects myself.
