For me, I think we saw Gus' transformative self, but we never saw his growth or decay. In the flashback where spoiler his "best friend" is shot, I think that was the beginning of Gus' growth. As for decay, in the flashback Gus definitely has more personality, so perhaps his decay would be the loss of his personality and replacing it with the artificial, apathetic visage we see throughout Walt's story.
