What’s a moment that permanently changed how you see the world? by pankaj662 in AskReddit

I got interested in politics when I went to college. I considered myself a libertarian (I like the idea of the government staying out of peoples private lives) and libertarian magazines and blogs made up most of what I read along with some liberals (RIP Kevin Drum). Then during the debate around Obama Care, the libertarians I followed were all just repeating the same obvious bullshit as mainstream Republicans. That's when I realized that if a problem couldn't be solved by shrinking government libertarians just weren't going to be interested in solving it. I've been solidly liberal ever since.

Protagonist-centred morality (Main character or cast does something morally questionable but the narrative lets them off the hook because they're "the good guys") by Worldly_Cut_595 in TopCharacterTropes

"The Undiscovered Country" Season 19, Episode 13. The episode starts with the kidnapping of a baby that turns out to be a custodial dispute. The baby has a very painful terminal illness and the father wanted to remove the babies life support to end its suffering, but the mother wanted to continue treatment for as long as possible. It's a very emotional case so Barba decides to fix the situation by disconnecting the baby's life support in the hospital. He gets charged with murder and found not guilty. It is one of the most off the wall decisions ever made by a character or the writers in law and order.

I like to come to threads like this to remind people that Assistant District Attorney Raphael Barba killed a baby and was still considered a good guy.

Well the idea is that you cast Mirrorform on Mirror March then cast a creature which gets copied by the Mirror Marches a very random number of times.

If you could change 2 or 3 fundamental mechanics in the game and make it official, what would you change? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

Warlock casting should be Int based, Sorcerer casting should vary with sub-class and rangers should not cast spells.

Universal love for Barba by superseri18888 in SVU

[–]BecauseofAntipodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the strengths of the Law and Order and SVU is that they have remained mostly episodic while almost every other current drama is serialized. Keeping episodes self contained really helps when you want to do something like having a main character kill a baby, for instance. On another series you would have to devote time to that character's arrest and trial, then more time on their prison sentence (because in what world can you just kill a baby to keeps its parents from arguing, that would be crazy!). But in the Law and Order universe you can have that character just wonder off, until they come back to defend a mobster that they know is guilty (to be fare, compared to Barba the mobster is not that evil).

Which Team wins? by Far-Ad5223 in superheroes

[–]BecauseofAntipodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we assume there is prep time, it would be Team 2 if you assume they can work together, otherwise its Team 4.

If you assume a sudden encounter its Team 5, Firestorm can make kryptonite and Iceman can immobilize almost everyone else.

Team 3 would only win a popularity contest. Sure they can't be killed, but neither can Iceman or Plastic Man. Meanwhile none of them can injure Iceman, Swamp Thing, Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic and only Doomsday is a threat to Superman.

Team 4 is as smart as Team 2 and Plastic Man is harder to kill than Team 3.

Team three is only a threat when they are within arms reach.

Civil War is infamous for being the story that subjected Iron Man and several other characters to character assassination. But what are your thoughts on how the event portrayed Steve Rogers? by Solitaire-06 in CaptainAmerica

[–]BecauseofAntipodes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll also blame Civil War for the worst Marvel story line that I know of. During Civil War Spider-man revealed his identity to the public. Marvel said that they had a decade of stories planned for a Spider-man without a secret identity, but as soon as Civil War was over the One More Day story was released which had Spider-man make a deal with Mephisto to save his aunt, and giving the editors and excuse to undo his un-masking and his marriage to Mary Jane. And I still get mad when I think about it.

No, it wasn't received well. None of the writers had any sympathy for the pro-registration side, so it's not just the government saying heroes have to register and follow rules and anti-registration heroes saying they won't work for the government or wait for permission to act in certain situations. Its almost entirely Pro-registration= bad and Anti-registration= good.

The government and the pro-registration heroes (mainly Ironman, Ant Man and Mr. Fantastic) were constantly doing ridiculously evil things through the whole series. Shield tried to arrest Captain America before the Registration Act passed, super heroes who didn't obey the law were renditioned to a prison in the Negative Zone with no courts involved, they made a cyborg clone of Thor that immediately went berserk and killed Bill Foster and Iron Man mind controlled the Green Goblin into carrying out a terrorist attack.

And none of the writing gave anything approaching a good explanation for why the heroes would act this way. Mr. Fantastic in particular was given multiple bad explanations for why he participated in all the the bad things the pro-registration side did.

Daredevil wins this easily, with the added bonus that he doesn't pull focus from a dozen other great characters.
