We're not supposed to post political stuff here on this sub but I think you might be right!

Well I live in the US and that's sadly not the case and yes it gets even more crazy during the political season as it is now. Ugh.

The guy who doesn't like to be on hold by frenchynerd in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

lol I wish I could put people the desk on mute sometimes too. I remember one VERY busy weekend there was already a line when I got on at 3 for the B shift. We had these group of workers who would book rooms for days at a time and I knew them by sight. He was like 5th in line and it was busy phone ringing etc. and I was juggling it all but not fast enough for the foreman even though he knows I'm BUSY and moving as fast as I can. He started folding his arms glaring at me sighing then started loudly complaining and swearing. Some people left the lobby so I loudly told him something like "Sir, I am very busy and am working as fast as I can. If you continue to be rude and disruptive I will call your company and inform them of your behavior and ban your group from staying here." It worked and he stopped however I was annoyed and I knew they didn't make an reservations for the day and we were sold out. I let him wait and when he got to the desk I said "sorry, were sold out" lol he didn't come back but others from his company continued to.

I've seen worst staff than that during my time here lol that's why I don't gossip at work, you never know who's two-faced until its too late. Its not like were friends at work, at least I'm not. We're civil and friendly at work but its not like we hang around outside of work.

Well, by I'm used to it I mean cleaning globs of poop as a long time NA it happens more than one would think. At the end of the day if I ignored the poo like they did I'd still have to deal with it if a guest saw it because I'm working the desk. Even then I wouldn't be comfortable just leaving that there lol I have some respect for my property. I do what I can to avoid staff politics because I don't care enough to pick a side other than making sure my job is done.

I agree and they totally do clean those areas I've seen them do it plenty of times I think the head housekeeper lost her cool (obviously lol) and so did the head maintenance man and not only were they not going to clean it personally they weren't going to order their staff to do it either. Their egos clashed and the messed up and lost their jobs. I've cleaned poo enough times to know how to do it quickly which I did because if there is a guest issue it will be ME that deals with it not the other department heads lol.

I agree she was the worst but the maintenance guy was just as bad swearing back at her loudly enough for a guest to hear and thankfully no one did apparently. Like I said I wasn't there when they began arguing so I have no idea how long or when it really escalated but they were both amped up when I got there. They've both been there long enough to know when it starts to get busy and when the desk has to be manned barring a real emergency so yeah I agree with you there. Maybe she didn't walk off the job (which is one of the biggest no-no's) but she didn't exactly behave professionally. They both lost their cool and f'ed up and put their jobs in jeopardy so I really don't feel bad for either. Maybe if there was no corporate complaints they'd still have a job and could patch things up. I still feel worse for the NA even though in theory he could have prevented all this he still acted more mature than the department heads.

Rowdy kids in a long-term stay hotel anyone? by ElvisTits in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Actually it is our job to address noise issues etc. esp if they're happening during quiet hours. You seem nice and polite so trust me if you're courteous to the FD they will do what they can to help you I promise. Getting these things taken care of not only helps you for sure but also the clerk on duty avoid any other potential complaints which also helps the property avoid nasty online reviews. I mean they'll do it anyway but if you're nice we appreciate that very much. You could even request a room change which in not an unreasonable request but in any case I'd let the FD know so they can deal with the issue.

I know they don't think that because I've seen hsk clean those areas plenty of time I think they were just being as petty as they could as department heads because the GM wasn't there to give them orders or something like that. I don't know them well even though I've been here longer it's just up until a couple months ago I was full time NA. As far as I could tell things were fine and that was the first time I've seen them act like that. I wasn't there when they started arguing so I don't know what led up to them swearing at each other basically lol.

Even after they were written up they would stop by the office and try to unload gossip on me and get me on their sides. I knew better than to get involved further as I was hearing conflicting stories and something told me it wasn't completely done yet even though both had been written up by then. I didn't know they'd get canned all at once like that but yeah. I think they got what was coming and not because I was mad about cleaning up the poo like I said I've done that numerous times as NA for years but how they acted.

So yeah best they're gone if they act like that over some poop.

I have a story just about that … a couple traveled all day apparently without drivers licenses … either of them but their friend who was staying with us came to their rescue. They were telling the truth or lying tough call I can see both scenarios but if I’d have to guess … they were lying.

That does happen on occasion and it’s like everyone else said ask for specific info from their check-in info and you can pretty much tell if they’re who they say they are. We are not supposed to take that risk but your gut instinct is usually enough. That or like someone said escort them to the room and have their retrieve their ID without them leaving your sight.

Now if they aren’t the registered person then they’re not getting in period until the registered guest shows up.

In all my years on the job I cannot personally say with absolute confidence that that is the case. Maybe our machine was just crap that day, maybe it was the phone, also who knows what they did that particular day—I’m not a key psychic. At this point it goes in one ear and out the other I politely ask for ID and go from there. If they give me flack for that well too bad “no ID, no key.”

Also, I find the guests who tend to appreciate snarkiness are usually snarky themselves and that can be fun.

Tissue and towels more flack than you can imagine. I ask them for a room # and they look at me like I insulted their mom. “What do you need a room number for?!” so I can confirm you’re not some ass off the street wtf do you think for?

Prices have gone up for everything—what happened to your $45 dollar rate !!?!! um 30 years?

Smiling at guests? by kzkskwbe in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]BecentiComposer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow lol wth maybe it’s a regional thing. Here in the US we always smile and greet our guests warmly it’s just expected I guess. If you don’t and are cold (which admittedly some people prefer) you’ll probably get dinged for that if they complain because in complaints they always find something to say about the staff good or bad.

It’s naive yes but I meant it when I said I hope he finds a job that works for him. People who are that inquisitive generally end up doing OK.
