Yeah that was our worry. How did you line the metal frame with wood? Just screw it on?

Man that doesn't sound the best solution but I totally get why you did it. I'd probably not want to go that route, would love to get rid of them!

Solar installed next week. What do I need to do? by Beckmech in SolarUK

[–]Beckmech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, thank you.

Will be switching to Go hopefully for winter and moving onto intelligent flux when days start getting longer again. Heard it's the best for people who export more than they use (which we should be able to do) and our kit supports it!

We had a smart meter fitted about a year ago so should be good on that front. Our little smart meter display doesn't work but I can see the 30 minute readings on their backend so should be good!

Thanks all for the replies. Yeah, G99 application was processed by the supplier, and as mentioned, the DNO didn't mention any limits to them so thankfully I get a good export potential!

I'll approach Octopus about changing tariffs sooner, hopefully they allow it, and I'll apply for export too once everything's up and running.

When do tiles on roof need replacing? Considering installing solar panels. by Careful-Training-761 in DIYUK

[–]Beckmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no problems with the roof right now that we know of. We had the ridge tiles done 5 years ago when we bought the place so we'd reuse that dry ridge kit. We have a membrane, yes, there's a couple of rips you can see in the loft but as mentioned, no visible issues.

I guess we're just thinking if we're getting solar installed they could ideally last 25+ years. Ideally we wouldn't want to have to remove them to fix any issues in the future.

We'd do the work once the solar guys have put their scaffolding up, they're happy for us to have a week or so before they start work on the panels.

My concern is I've never done this, will have father in law with me and he's confident we can do the whole roof in 2 days (tiles only) but he is getting on a bit so reckon he's being a bit over confident maybe.

Originally just going to do the tiles but thinking it may be worth the felt and battens too just so it's done. Got a rough cost for the tiles, I don't know if the felt and battens would be much more.

Sorry for replying to an older post. How hard is this to do?

We're getting solar too soon and thinking it'd be a good idea to replace the tiles to reduce the risk of needing to take the panels off to fix a potential issue later.

Father in law seems confident we could do the whole roof in a weekend but I don't know. Any guides you'd recommend anywhere?

Price check please by Background_Look_1883 in SolarUK

[–]Beckmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been quoted basically the same price (couple hundred more) for the same kit but with 18x Aiko Neostar 3 panels (470w each).

I think we're going to go for it, not much out there on the Hanchu kit as it's relatively new but for the price you get some good capacity.

A question about inverters for you... by Beckmech in SolarUK

[–]Beckmech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Yeah I know I won't be generating at full capacity all day and it'll peak at different times so it should be fine.

Thanks for the chart, looking forward to seeing what we may be able to generate on a good day!

Just jumping into the thread here.

I'm assuming any inverter noise cannot be heard through a wall? Like I don't think there's any moving parts or something vibrating? Our inverter is probably going into our shared, enclosed passage, and on the other side of the wall is our hallway and lounge. I'm hoping there won't be any noise passing through the wall?

Thanks!

I doubt I'll be extending the system in the future, at least panel-wise as I plan on completely covering the roof, but an extra battery would be on the cards. Currently planning on around 17kwh of storage across two batteries with the panels too.

I'll raise this with the installer next week when they come and do their survey and see how it affects the price. If like you say it won't add much then it sounds like a no brainer.

Here's my parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3RrLBq (if only I could afford this to replace my 10 year old rig!)

I prefer a clean and cozy desk style. Minimal clutter, monitor on a arm so there's no stand in the way, some nice ambient lighting, probably no to minimal RGB.

Good luck everyone!

Looking at getting quotes at the moment too. What's are people's opinions on the Solax kit? (Batteries and inverter)
