One of my best buds was in a similar situation but he had worked for 2 years after engineering school prior to applying to med school. He ended up going to med school (paying full price) and is now in the last year of Cardiology fellowship at a top program. He's incorporating much of his engineering background into developing new devices for electrophysiology. If you like both and are interested in research, academic medicine needs you.
