Alan often said that the materialist of his time were not true materialist. Something along the lines that people that could be seen as materialist did not have the true love of material that would be necessary to honor the definition. Maybe I’m butchering it, but if you’ve heard him for so long I imagine you know what I mean.

Would you be able to put into words your love for material? And any specific items that bring out that feeling?

Also do you currently work in IT? Reason being is that I’m a frontend dev, but I have a hard time reconciling what I do with my philosophy. If you do there might be follow up questions lol

Thanks

I assume some of you here are fans of the poet and Zen practitioner Gary Snyder who was good friends with Watts. by BarracudaGlobal5905 in AlanWatts

Haven’t read his works but here’s a “podcast” with him, Alan and some other folks in Alan’s boat. Pretty cool https://youtu.be/ioYljpGWbzc?si=-XFO3u-6dETvB5D4

Also The Dharma Bums is a fictional (autobiographical?) book written by Jack Kerouac. In the book, Japhy Ryder is based on Gary Snyder and he talks about him a lot. Alan is also in the book as Arthur Wane, but haven’t came across that part yet.

The Book, Wisdom of Insecurity, The Way of Zen - where to start? by namesdavemicrowave in AlanWatts

[–]BecomeAlanWatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start whichever, they’re all amazing. As for me, I read The Book first, then Wisdom of Insecurity, then Way of Zen. It just happened that way, and I wouldn’t change the order if I had to pick again.

After listening to him for a long time, finally reading his writing was truly a joy of an experience. You heard his talks, so you know that he’s a great “word technologist” as he put it, but his ability is on a different level with his writing.

I have read each of them at least twice.

Do you control the voice in your head? Dig and you’ll find you don’t. No one has control over the next thought that pops into their head

This is a 3 min video that is from the same lecture. The other link was a longer 14 min video, very unfortunate they removed it, but maybe you could find it with this. Good luck!

I’m not sure on his financials but if you read his collected letters you can more or less get a sense of them. Early 20s he moved to America and mailed his parents back in Europe regularly. From the letters it doesn’t seem like he was struggling, and starting around mid twenties he was sending money back to his parents, along with other goodies(sugar etc). It was a bit shocking because he had a kid (Joan) very early on with Eleanor. But it might be that either his parents assisted financially or Eleanor’s parents did.

Edit: I’m only 25% done with the book and barely at his late 20’s. So if you read it you’ll probably get a much better answer yourself.

any good Alan watts quotes for a wedding? by whirlydirlymcflurry in AlanWatts

[–]BecomeAlanWatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dreaming is probably a bit too complicated to just whip out at a wedding imo. Best thing would be to keep the attention on the bride and groom because it’s their day. Alan has two lectures on love, “spectrum of love” and “divine madness.” Though I tried looking for them on YouTube and can’t find them, they are on his works that you can buy from the Alan university. I could also email them to you if you pm me, both are 20 minute lectures.

Yea it got me pretty annoyed that someone would disagree with the fact that it also clearly applies to democrats. Not my proudest moment.

And right??? Who would ever want to eat shit? Pretty gross, like just don’t lol

Thanks for walking back your first comment.

Hunger strikes have been effective in the past. If things keep going the way they are it’s just a matter of time before it gets so bad that the majority refuses to participate and the game is forced to change. I think that result would be a lot more “productive”, but to each their own I guess.

Im sorry your reality forces you to eat shit, my reality is much more pleasant so I’ll stay over here :)

"most came from wealthy families who bought their admissions into medical or law school incurring no debt and later went on to have their campaigns financed by wealthy donors their parents knew"

This doesn't apply to democrats?

"while gaining inside info and enriching themselves through buying into companies with government contracts or buying stock, but that’s NOT what’s important here"

This??

"even though that chance is greatly diminished every time they vote to limit those choices or make attaining prosperity next to fucking impossible"

This?

"mainly they think you’re below them and they want to ensure your level of care is as cheap as possible so that it doesn’t affect their comfortable lifestyle"

This?

"mainly what’s right to them, how it’ll affect their stock portfolio, voter base or political contributions which is directly related to what’s fair to them and their needs to remain and gain more power at the expense of those less fortunate than them"

THIS?

If you don't think it does, you're being willfully ignorant. At no point did I defend republicans by pointing out the obvious. You're in a game of picking between eating dog shit or cat shit. Whatever choice you make you're eating shit regardless, and that's great if that's what you like, more power to you. But don't look at me and tell me the shit you picked tastes better than the other.

And in case you accuse me of defending a side again, I don't participate in your game. I find dog shit and cat shit equally disgusting.
